Members ollenorin
Im just wondering....almost all cabs made for vox-type amps and combos are open or halfopen in the back. Why is that ? Anyone plays a "Vox" with a closed back cab ?
Members papa taco
Yeah, in general it seems to sound better to me. Although, I like the ef86 channel into a closed back cab with G12H speakers. But all the magic seems to be with alnico blue type speakers in open or semi open back configuration. Especially with the top boost channel. taco

Members papa taco
Have you tried the hayseed through any of your 4x12's yet? I'll bet that would be sweet. Maybe put a mix of ceramic weber blue and silver dogs in a 4x12? Just because traditional vox tones are alnico and open back doesn't mean that ceramics in closed backs wouldn't kill. Especially in a 4x12. After all, vox does currently make a 4x12.
Members Nico de Roode
Maybe not as nice as a matching valvetech but how about this one:http://www.avatarspeakers.com/vintage%20g212.htm

Members The Real MC
I'm about to order one of those alnico-loaded AC30 open back extension cabs from Northcoast Music, and am ordering the backplate to convert it to closed back. I recently compared alnicos to neodogs at a store and the alnicos won hands down.
Members papa taco
I would think an old beat up Vox 2x12 cab or some kind of tweed pine 2x12 cab would be sweet. Load it up with Celestion or Weber blues and you're the mang, mang.

I'm sure it's birch ply. Maybe go to plexi-palace.com and ask about the recent vox cabs. They have a good vox forum there.I'm half considering getting a celestion blue and mixing it with the weber 30 watt blue I already have in my 2x12 (Kingsley 13 ply birch). I think they'd mix nicely. The weber is a bit warmer and the celestion would be a bit chimier (and louder).Have you tried an a/b switch between the channels yet? I've listed my current rig below, and I love having separate inputs for each channel. Bloody handy.taco
Members ollenorin
nope havent tried much at all since i dont have the right cab yet for the hayseed. im gonna put a celestion alnico gold (which is the daddy of the blue and rated at 50 watts) and a Celestion Heritage G12H in it. that must be an awesome combo. Members papa taco
That should be nice. The heritage G12H might be a bit bright though, just a warning. If you find it is and you want something warm to mix with the Celestion Gold, maybe a Weber silver ceramic will fit the bill. Either way, break them in before you really decide. taco
Members ollenorin
have you had the heritage G12H ? Theyre supposed to be much warmer sounding than the regular Anniversary G12H...and more expensive as well.
Members Sir H C
I have run my AC-50 with a Marshall 4x12" and it is amazing. Crunch galore, and sounds great. The early AC-30s had open backs because you would put your amp at the front of the stage and you were behind it. So to hear, open back. From the back the knobs make sense. Yeah, they've got the 55 hz cone so will be deeper and warmer but I believe they still have quite a bit of treble up top like the other G12H's. I may be wrong, I think that's what they say over at gearpage. taco
Members ollenorin
ill think ill go with the cheap Vox 2x12 cab and switch speakers.....if i like it ill keep it, otherwise....bye bye cab i think the heritage g12h sounds excellent once they have broken in, which should be easy to do. I just checked gearpage. A few of those rich dudes are into the Gold and Heritage G12H pairing. Good call on getting the vox. I like the two handles on top for carrying. Members aeon
Celestion Gold + Century Vintage might prove to be a very potent alternative combo for Voxy amps aside from the "2 x blue" approach. cheers, Ian
