Best Distortion Pedal for a Tube Amp

really want a good metal pedal for my 2 Vintage Tube amps - not overdrive but insane death metal - my Zoom G2 sounds great with my SS amps but not so great with my tubers... are tube amps good candidates for metal? Really like the tube sound - my SS amps work fine for Metal but I want the tube sound and these 2 small tubers are 5 watts and 15 watts with no real metal type distortion - just great tube overdrive when cranked...

same boat here... I have a deluxe reverb and have been looking for a pedal to cover that kind of ground when i need to get nasty.

I just got a Digitech Deathmetal and its really working out great so far. Its all about dialing out the highs in the perfect tweak to avoid fizz.

Have heard great things about the EH Metal Muff too.

+1 for the Metal Muff..

My son got one for his birthday and we use it with a Carvin X-100B. The X-100B is not known as a high-gain amp, but the MM makes the amp ROAR...

Since my black Russian Big Muff dies I've been using his MM with the distortion rolled off most of the way. I can get creamy fuzz tones out of it, though a bit too aggressive for my taste.. Top Boost is useless unless you like having icepicks driven into your ears, but the pedal sounds good if you ignore that switch.

Try one out...

alright - may pick up a Metal Muff from my local GC and try it out - since your Carvin is a tube amp it sounds like a good recommendation. I've been playing on my old Roland DAC amp this afternoon (SS amp from the 80's) with my Zoom G2 and I do get some great sounds out of it but I want something for my Tube amps as I love the tubers to death :thu:

It really depends on the specific amp. And even with a pedal-friendly amp, you have to match it with the right pedal(s).
I have a Carvin MTS-3212 and it works great with pedals. It has 6L6GC tubes, and has a lot of headroom. Some pedals that sound great with the Carvin may not sound great with other tube amps.

Eddie hit the nail on the head. There is no #1 Perfect Distortion Pedal for every tube amp.

Which small tube amps are you working with?

There are any number of pedals that may do what you want, some available at your local GC, some made by hand in small batches by gnomes deep in a cavern beneath the Schwarzwald.

The more you tell us about your current rig and the sound your looking for, the more specific we can be when we disagree with each other :)

If you're headed to GC, check out the Metal Muff, the Line 6 Uber Metal, and the venerable Boss Metal Zone, but for all I know so far you might be just as happy with a DS-1.
