Members aeonrevolution
Anyone ever play? I'm around a 9-15kyu right now. I haven't been playing enough lately to get a solid rank. Two or three years ago i used to play this nonstop after seeing it in the movie Pi.

Members MorePaul
Used to a couple of decades ago (I'll still play the occasional game, but that's not even enough to estimate my ranking handicap and my games a VERY inconsistent)The wife is pretty avid nowOrange -- check out "The book of Go" (yes, they are all named that ) by CobbOne problem with many texts and people (BTW I find the same thing abt people teaching backgammon and Bridge) is that they try to teach strategy AND rules at the same time and sometimes try to use only example with no explanation"Oh NO! not there move!!""Do you mean I'm not allowed to? or do you mean it's allowable but unwise?"[i think this happens because the rules are really very simple..you could put them on the back of a sugar packet -- so a lot of the richness lies in the structures you make...and instructors get very excited to move on to that]Cobb avoids that and he also starts off with "first capture" GO (basically score one point and the game is over) to cement the basic mechanicsLasker (yup, the Chess Chrandmaster) also wrote a good text, but it reads a little old and I don't think makes the best introduction
Members aeonrevolution
Another easy way to learn is just keep playing online. There are a few really good communities where you have no problem finding help. KGS is my favorite one.
Members MorePaul
By all means, there is no substitute for playing One advantage of the Cobb is that he is, specifically, a Nihon Ki-in certified Go instructor (as opposed to a player...not all players make good teachers...I find some of em can be damaging to the beginner...'skewing' to their style, interests or limits), is on the board of the AGA, and it doesn't hurt that he is a Westerner (for the purpose teaching Westerners) I wish there were (or rather, commonly available) such resources back when I started
Members capnbringdown
I did love the movie Pi. It was pretty {censored}ed up, though. I've never played Go. Is it more complicated then Chess?

In terms of rules...no, much simpler In terms of richness...yes..Lasker (that I mentioned earlier), was the World Chess Champion for abt 25 years (and a hell of a bridge player) and conidered go richer than chess [i personally find them complimentary games]
Members orangedrink
I'm a big fan of Chess, so I've always been eager to play Go to see another side of things...I'll have to check out some online communities
