War Pig Arrived Today

I only had the chance to play it for about 20 minutes, so this might be a little hasty. I played it through my Musicman HD130 and Fender PA100. The Fender is a little dark, and the Musicman only sounds good when it's pushed really hard, so I got a better feel for the pedal through the Fender. My first impression was that it sounds exactly like Kurt Cobain's tone from the Nevermind era, but with a lot more edge and grit. A lot like the tone on the intro of Stay Away. It's really bass heavy, but in a way that cuts through and doesn't overpower.

After a few minutes of noodling around and finding the personality of the pedal I decided to play with the single drive knob. I started with it at 12 oclock, and to my amazement it just kept getting louder and louder. The thing has a lot of boost to it.

The main thing I noticed after a few minutes was that the volume knob on my guitar really altered the tone when I used it, more so than I've ever seen in another pedal. As I said already the pedal was pretty heavy on the low end, but even the slightest touch on my volume knob and I cut that down to give it a Rat sort of tone, growly and much more clear and responsive. At full volume, it slightly resembles a muff, in that you can't really make out complex chord structures. As soon as I pulled the volume on my guitar back just a hair I could make out everything. Of course, it did brighten the tone a little, so my tone knob needed slight adjustment too. Through the Fender I can see completely falling in love with this pedal.

As for the Musicman, it was just too much to handle with all the gain the amp has on tap, and it just doesn't sound good with the pre-amp turned down. I've been meaning to get it looked at forever, but I haven't gotten around to it since it sounds so good cranked. I did find one good use for it through the MM though. If I did the volume knob trick and turned down just slightly it gave me a very Albini type sound. A lot like what I expect the Harmonic Percolator to sound like. Shellac all the way.

So two thumbs up for this one. Gringo's the man.

Glad to hear you're liking it. After I played it in my "farewell session" I was kind of hoping you'd back out of the deal when I emailed you to see if the deal was still on. :) Fuzz must be the crack cocaine of guitar effects, one sample and it's all over, you just want more and more!

The whole range of in-between tones you can get when you start messing with the settings of the amp/pedal/guitar volume knobs is mind-boggling. I mentioned it to Gringo, and he said he knew all about that capability but he figured it would be best to let the pedal do the talking. The War Pig ain't no one-trick pony, no way, no how!

Spent most of the night in my basement playing. This thing rules. It has a lot of personality. It definitely gets better at higher volumes, which is exactly what I hoped for. I have a new project in the works that this should do well with.

As far as I know Gringo doesn't have a site, at least not for his pedal creations. It's more of a hobby for him. They're just so good that the hype machine has all of us here gassing for them. Although this time the hype machine is fully justified.
