so i'm about to drop some cash, and its between a few pedals:

the frequency analyzer or the stereo polyphase

the mxr mc401 boost or micro amp or maxon graphic eq

i really want both the freq analyzer and the polyphase but cant afford both right now. also there is now mix/blend knob on the polyphase which makes me kind of wary buying it...

i really need a boost as well...the micro amp is the cheapest, but it seem like the 401 or graphic eq would be better tonally...

currently my rig is really simple: bc rich mockingbird --> arion sad1 --> epi valve jr combo

i play a lot of experimental stuff, but funk, soul and dance (think daft punk or braxe and falke) are the backbone of the type of music me n my mates make...

buy used
Microamp is OK if you like your amp sound, the Microamp will make it louder, an EQ is very useful when you want to get a totally different tone from your amp
the Polyphase I have not tried, but I have the Frequency Analyzer and it's a lot of fun to play with, when used sparingly, difficult to dial in settings that go along well with what I'm playing, it's always a bit out of control, but when the setting works with the notes I'm playing, it is superb
if you're into funk, soul and dance, have you considered an envelope filter, like the Q-Tron ?

i have used a friend's microamp (the black model) and enjoyed it; i have just heard good things about the 401 being exceptionally clean...also i would use the maxon eq to give a little extra top end (+ boost) cuz i find the valve jr to be a little bassy...
when i do get a envelope filter, i think i will go for the maxon or moog
i was also considering the microsynth instead of the frequency analyzer, but cuz of its price i would have to wait on a boost...
