Crybaby wah Sucking Tone From My dirt

So, when people say "it sucks my tone," what exactly are they talking about? What's the clue-in, telling thing to look for? I use primarily Boss pedals and I have never had a problem with the end result (when all pedals are off) sounding different with them in my signal chain than just guitar->amplifier. I'm a high-end headphone enthusiast, so I'm not backwards when it comes to hearing nuance differences, but I really can't tell much of - if any - difference between no pedals and all pedals but off.

Caveat being that I only use three pedals, so perhaps there isn't much electrically in the way at that point.

Is the CB Wah especially bad about this? And, if so, anyone have an idea why it might be so? No bypass, or what?

Imagine playing guitar with a very bad cold. You know that muffled sound that makes what you hear sound less crisp, kinda like the treble not cutting as well, and the bass not thumping like it should? To me, that's what the Crybaby buffer sounds like.

Boss buffers are very good and though some people are bothered by the sound, I personally can't tell the difference betwen pure sound and the Boss buffer. The only time a Boss buffer gets in he way is when I'm trying to play a Fuzz Face or a Fuzz Factory -- those pedals typically need the direct interaction with the pickups.

The Crybaby wah's bypass is bad because it's porly designed. Thankfully, the mods are easy.

Thanks for the info. Is it a universal wah problem, or just a CB thing?

Some wahs are built to be true bypass and don't have this problem. For example, Teese RMC and Fulltone among others.

If one had a Dimebag wah, how would one do these mods?

Here is a link illustrating the mods for some oler Vox and CB wahs. It notes that the newer CBs may require cutting traces on the PC board and this should not be attemped by n00bs. If this is the case, put it in a loop with someting like this or getting a mod such as this or one by another modder.

With wahs, TB rules!

:) :) ;):)
