Members paydirt
I haven't mentioned this here before, but my youngest son (15) is a spectacular baseball player. He plays on his High school team and on a year round travel ball team, that happens to be an 18 and under team. Meaning most of the players on his travel ball team are playing college ball. He starts and plays shortstop, 2nd base and Center field. He also is the fastest kid on any of the teams he's ever played on. At 15 he runs a true 4.6 40. I ran a 4.4when I was 18 and he will easily surpass that. A month ago he pulled a muscle in his quad and his coach told him to take the Christmas break off (No baseball, No running, apply heat and stretch). Well he had a tournament this weekend (1 month later) and he hit a double. While rounding first I saw him pull up short and sort of hobble into second. It was a double header that day so I went and bought some wrap and wrapped his thigh up really tight and they put him in as the DH. He was stiff legging it all game. I need to get him better ASAP. I am not sure who to take him to. My wife wants to take him to my Orthopedic Surgeon, but I don't really know of any other options like Sports rehab clinics, etc.) Anyone have any experience with anything like this. This is his year. He already has scouts looking at him, but if I don't get this fixed, he could miss the high school season.
Members mikesr1963
My son was really into baseball 5 or 6 years ago and I coached a few times as well. I watched one kid who had a great arm and by the time he got out of highschool he had already had 3 operations and wasn't playing squat. Take him to your doctor and get a referral and follow the doctors instructions. He's young and will heal quick but he's much more that a piece property. Members Elliott Damage
take him to a well known doctor who specializes in sports medicine and rehab. I have injuries that still hurt from high school because my family doctor didn't know {censored} about how to deal with the stuff. call around, ask for references i guess. Members johnrambo
injuries like that tend to reoccur when you don't give them proper time to heal completely. if you rush to get him back out there, chances are it will keep happening. he's young and if he's that good he doesn't need to ruin his chances by not allowing himself to heal. at 15 he's got plenty of time. I think that's the only thing that worries me about the Orthopedic surgeon, is that I would like to not cut if possible. Obviously if that's what has to be done, that's what has to be done. Just curious because if it's torn muscle, can that heal itself with therapy?

Members utterhack
Thanks Utter De nada - here's hoping it's nothing a little rest and/or appropriate rehab won't fix right up. No personal experience with K/J, but they certainly come highly recommended. Santa Monica Orthopedic Group has cut on, reconstructed, and rehabbed two fingers on my frettin' hand Both places know not only what the body needs, but how to work with jocks, which is half the battle in a rehab situation. He's been doing some speed training with Chone Figgins (Angels) brother. I think Jobe was doing the Angels for a while. I'll ask Chone tomorrow. Thanks again. I completely agree. I played some serious baseball a few years ago and you have to give muscle strains/pulls time. There is no quick fix. Stretch good and always warm up when you're healthy too. That helps alot.

I told him to really stretch and jog and get warmed up before the game, but you could see when it happened. Poor kid's in pain, and doesn't do tylenol (or any pill ) well. Just heating it until we can get the appointment.

Im not a smaller guy 6' 210lbs and I pitched and played first so I was by no means a speed player but I always took alot of time stretching and running. The only time I ever got hurt was playing high school ball and we had a former basketball coach (never coached baseball before) that wouldnt let us warm up properly at practice and kansas in march can be pretty chilly. Funny thing is he played football all Fall and no injuries. That's where I was really concerned about him getting a db taking out his knee or something. But these little tears (if that's all it is) if not healed properly will never go away. Kind of funny to watch him play with some of these college guys that are just monsters. Then you see him come to the plate.

I've seen kids throwing a curve (and not properly at that) at 11 years old. That is ridiculous. His arm will be jelly by the time he's 19. It's just so damn competitive these days. I know the odds are against him making it, but everyone I talk to says he has the tools. Scouts tell me they look for speed first, hitting second, and if you can do those 2 they will teach you a position. If he gets a college scholarship, that's more than I could ever hope for. In all seriousness. Teach him to play a horn or sing. College's eat that crap up. I sing in college choir right now and its so much better than a baseball scholarship. But if baseball is what he wants to do alot of it is sticking with it. I've seen guys that werent' the greatest play 4 years of college ball just because they stuck with it. Members shepherdspy
Jeez, sounds like you are riding him hard, sportsdad. Let a kid be a kid. I do hope he heals completely. I would be VERY wary of surgical solutions unless it is absolutely necessary. This goes for sports or anything. They can often cause more problems than they solve. Surgeons believe in cutting. It is their job. They will promise the world. In reality, some surgeries work and some don't. FWIW, I have had pulled muscles that have taken way longer than one month to heal.
