my final semester of undergrad work and I have no classes on Tues and Thurs, the guitarless jazz band's rehearsal days. I emailed the prof and he said to come on. :thu: I'm going out on a limb as I can't sight read, my "down pat" chord vocabulary really only goes to add9 and sevenths, and the jazziest tune I know is "Marquee Moon" :freak: All that said, I can sight read rythms and the only way to learn is to play, right? Its big band jazz arrangements mostly, so it won't be as improvisationally demanding as combo stuff, thankfully. Its gonna be fun and I'll have killa chord chops by the time I graduate. :D Glad I got the Thinline instead of a solid body....

As long as you can move the chord shapes around quickly, you'll do fine.

Typical jazz guitar rhythm:

(insert fancy jazz chords here)

I can move around the chords I know, so I guess when I need to learn the new ones, I'll be able to move around those too. I only learn things as they are necessarry, so this is really the only way I'll ever take it upon myself to improve my vocabulary.

I'm the same way. :thu: Once I learn them good I can whip out the chords no problem...especially on a 24" scale neck. Its just forcing yourself to learn new stuff. Jazz Band should be most excellent for that.

Big Band is loads of fun. You'll have to woodshed a little on chords, but like you say, it will be a great way to learn some stuff.

You'll need to need to figure out your chords so you can keep things tight and avoid too much movement. The CAGED system is good for this. Also, try dropping the root from the chords and playing everything in the middle four strings.

One good way to practice is get a 12 bar blues and play everything without changing position (e.g., blues in G with only notes from frets 3-6). Then play the same key but a different position. Once you've done 5 positions up and down the neck for a key, change to another key. As you go along try looking for jazzier 12 bar patterns to make it tougher.

Anyway, have fun...

You can get away with playing simple 7th chord shapes (major, minor, dominant, half and fully dim 7) if you know how to superimpose chords. (that is play a simple chord as the upper section of a more complicated chord) For instance if you have a 7#11 chord (a.ka. Lydian Chord) you could simply play a minor triad built on the 7th (Bm if you were in C) or a major 7th chord built on the 5th (GMaj7 if you were in C) since the bass is going to be outlining the Root and Fifth the harmony as a whole will sound like a Maj7#11. That's a good way to get extra mileage of familiar shapes and because drop 2 voicings (your traditional 5th string root 7th chords) leave a lot of space, you won't get in the way of the horns.

Make sure you have 7ths and their inversions down cold and you'll be alright. If you know a few extended vocings and altered dominant shapes more power to you. But I would say at least make sure you can play all forms of 7ths and their inversions in any key.

I have this great book called "Beginning Jazz Guitar" that has charts of chord scales in different places all over the fretboard. I'm gonna go get the repetoire today, come home and work out the chords and work it out that way. Its gonna be fun.

Thats an interesting idea fk, it sounds like the way the Police composed many of their songs. I never really understood it until you spelled it out. The bassist is a solid theory guy, music major type so I figure I can whisper for help on the backline if I need too. Unless they put me down front or somethin...I oughta kick on the DMM for a solo sometime. :D
