Will a boss compressor help to smooth out my bass recordings?

It's likely to help in terms of evening out your recording, though the Boss CS-2 and CS-3 both seem to reduce your bass a bit.

If you want to solve the problem cheaply and easily, you might want to try a Magicstomp II (or Bass Magicstomp or Acoustic Magicstomp - they are all the same but for the colors). It has a great bass preamp with a compressor and limiter that fills out recordings very well. Perhaps the best part is that you can use the Magicstomp for a bunch of other things (it has a particularly outstanding phaser, reverb, and delays).

Oi. Back up. The GUITAR Magicstomp II has a bass preamp? Can it be used as a DI?

I was set to buy a Behringer Sansamp copy because I'm too lazy to haul my 4x10 back from rehearsal every time my band plays, and want to play in my room with a DI box plugged into my stereo. Will the Magicstomp do that?

If so I might just get that, and get some nice ambient effects to boot.
