Members mike.sartori
Do you use fuzz instead of an OD or distortion, or in addition to, or both at different times? I think I want to get a fuzz for leads, but I can't imagine using it for rhythm purposes. Tell me what is your prefered fuzz usage?
Members MrMunky
All of the above for me. My favorite fuzzes are those that can achieve a really long sustaining rhythm sound with powerful low end if you have your guitar volume all the way up, and then clean up a bit when you roll your volume knob back. With this you can easily choose between a more percussive rhythm effect ala Hendrix and a boomy, smooth rhythm effect kind of like you hear Eric Johnson use. Good Silicon Fuzz Faces & clones do both of these things very well. Germanium types, however, can get almost perfectly clean with just a bit of gritty compression. you can hear clips of a bunch of different fuzzes here: http://fuzz.inrerocknroll.com/clips.html
Members fuzzinator
Some fuzz pedals can be killer for power chording (Univox Super Fuzz), but I mostly use them for leads. The Big Muff and Fuzz Faces can work for virtually any chording scenario, providing you tweak them to suit your set up.
Members PurpleStrat
Get em all! I have been using my SoulBender as a light overdrive with the guitars volume down alot. When not using that I used a SCOD or MatchBox for overdrive. My BossTone Clone also does a great overdrive. It's all about what works for you. Members Ironhandjohn
The more I play the more fuzz and less OD I use. For moderate dirt I use amp distortion but I'm REALLY liking running a clean amp, then using a fuzz for dirt. Too much Gilmour influence, I guess... Members usa83strat
i use my 2 headed mosnter PnP side as a OD soudn, and the NpN side as an all out fuzz, ow ever i do use a Tube Screamer infront of them to boost them for solos. im also getting a Tone Factor Mule soon. Members mike.sartori
Whats Pnp and NpN? I see those terms a lot when describing fuzz but I don't understand the terminology
Members usa83strat
PnP fuzzes are positive ground NpN is brighter, has more bite and the fuzz characteristics are tighter in my opinion. Think Hendrix PnP are darker, better suited for classic tones, can clean uo real well, the soudnseems looser and a bit more lofi thatn NpN. Members StompboxMan
I am lucky enough to have an old 96 Fuzz Factory. I can turn my EC guitar volume off and get a crunchy rhythm tone then use more volume and more fuzz for other parts of the song. Fuzz Factory owners can do the same sound with a 7-7-3-5 setting. Members Sgt. Politeness
I have my amp set to slight dirt then I have 2 different OD's and 1 fuzz to choose from. Its basically dependent on the song. I'm using it more and more now in our band. If the song screams out to me "this needs FUZZ" then I use it. Sometimes during only the verse, sometimes just the solo, sometimes the whole song.
