Zoom G7.1ut pedal question

I'm trying to assign a cool wah/cry effect on the pedal, but it never seems to save or activate my settings. I've been through the manual and I can never seem to get it to do what I want it to do. In fact, the only time I can use the pedal is with those preset channels.

 

Any tips on using this thing? I just want to have a high gain channel, that when I stomp on the pedal, it gives me some groovy wah.
