Members trlkvsky
I feel I should point out that not all Tangerine Dream is recommendable. If you're interested though, I'd suggest Phaedra.

Guest Anonymous
COIL's output was wide and greatly varied in scope. In terms of amorphic, ambient, and atmospheric albums that are strangely calming and lack a downbeat of any sort, I highly suggest the following: Musick To Play In The Dark, Vol. 2 Musick To Play In The Dark, Vol. 1 Click on the link below and scroll to the middle of the page, far right:http://thresholdhouse.greedbag.com/ If you are unfamiliar with COIL, start with Vol. 2 and ignore the remainder of the itmes for the time being. The ones I mentioned, particularly Vol. 2, are a perfect place to start. Someone earlier in this thread mentioned Spiritualized. A member of that group named Thighpaulsandra was a member of COIL both live and in the studio. He performed on various synths including the Nord Lead 2. Also, he played Theremin with COIL. Thigh's mama Dorothy Lewis is a highly respected and acclaimed opera singer in the United Kingdom, by the way. In fact, she made a primary guest appearance on COIL's "Queens of the Circulating Library". If you can locate that recording, it's another one that I recommend. And if you are feeling super adventurous and would like to listen to something that would make even Iannis Xenakis or Vinko Globokar pee in their underoos, then check out "Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil". It's not at all gentle! Hehehehehhe. COIL is defunct due to the untimely death of Jhonn Balance at age 42 but he left a great legacy. His partner "Sleazy" Chrisopherson is once again active in music but the COIL ouevre ended permanently with Jhonn's unfortunate demise two years ago. Grow Antlers!! Members zarathustra1978
It depends on how far away from "rock" you want to get. E.g., Spiritualized is an awesome band, and their music has some nice ambience, but they're still very much in the rock vein. There are some great bands out there that use traditional instrumentation--i.e., guitar and bass as opposed to laptops--to make ambient and drone-ish music that has almost no rock influence. I think that's quite a bit different than the space-rock and post-rock bands mentioned in this thread, which tend to work ambient sounds into songs that are very much indebted to rock. Anyway, a couple you might like: - Growing (probably my favorite in this genre) - Byla (dudes from Dysrhythmia and Behold the Arctopus) - Robert Opalio (also check out his stuff with My Cat Is an Alien) - David Payne (feedback loop manipulation) - Anthony Milton (guitar + odd instrumentation) - Ajilvsga (fuzzed-out guitar drones) - Seht (this dude's just plain awesome) - White Rainbow (Adam Forkner of Yume Bitsu; also check out World and VVRSSNN, two of his other projects) Most of these guys probably have MySpace pages. There's a bunch more, but that should get you started. There's also a lot of interesting ambient-style music to be found in the psych-folk niche that all the critics seem to love these days (e.g., Jewelled Antler + friends); maybe pick up a comp like Wailing Bones for a good introduction to this stuff. And the standard noise genres are always good sources of inspiration.

It's the post-rockish stuff I haven't been real kean on. I like that stuff, have quite a bit, just not the mood I'm in right now. slower as oppossed to faster, clean as oppossed to distorted. I've been big into low lately as well.Just got done listening to the first track of the complete works volume one, and Spiritualized is exactly what I was looking for, thank you.
