Members roygbiv
Does anyone know if the guy from Deerhoof plays a jazzmaster? I was just listening to the last song on the new album (Friend Opportunity, excellent btw) and toward the end there is a beautiful guitar break. I'd like to know how he got the guitar to sound so "plucky".
Members inscho
the only pictures I've seen of them....i think one guy plays a tele thinline and the other plays les paul/sg here are some pics I found: http://www.icecreamman.com/site_draft/new/index_frame.html?http://www.icecreamman.com/music/article_648.shtml&
Members roygbiv
it could be the thinline on this tune, but i bet they used something different in the studio on this one song, because he uses a trem to get some warbles. I think its cute that the singer plays a Hofner.
Members fuzzinator
I'm totally with you - the guitar tones on "Look Away" are gorgeous. I really like the guitar tones on Runners Four too - all done on a Pod XT.
Members trlkvsky
Deerhoof are definitely one of my favorite bands. Unfortunately the second guitarist, Chris Cohen, has left the band, but surprisingly it doesn't seem to affect their overall live sound much. As others have mentioned, the guitar player does play a thinline, and as far as a can tell from pics I've seen, Chris sometimes played bass while Satomi (the singer) switched to guitar, mainly an SG. I've also seen pics with Chris playing a LP jr. iirc. But I'm really surprised to learn Runners Four was recorded with a Pod XT, 'cuz those tones are great! Members fuzzinator
I was floored they used a Pod, too. But when you take that fact, and the fact that the guitars on Dungen's last album were done on a Pod, you quickly realize that good tone IS in your ears and hands. The gear is just a conduit. Those are two of my favorite guitar albums of this decade.

Members voerking
John also used to use an old cheapo pawn shop guitar live (Teisco, maybe? hagstrom? i don't remember...it was red).
Members fuzzinator
Yes, they used other effects, but still used A LOT of Pod. I imagine the Octavia freak out in that one instrumental was the Octavia on the Pod. They mention amps too, but don't specify if they reamped the Pod through them. Members trlkvsky
Just listened to the new album twice. I can hardly believe it, but I think they've matched, if not surpassed - time will tell - Runners Four.
Members fuzzinator
I've liked every single Deerhoof album since Reville. I think Runners Four pushed them to the top for me. They have become one of my favorite bands. Consistently challenging and tuneful. Friend Opportunity is starting to kick my ass.
Members roygbiv
at first i didn't like friend opportunity as much as runners four. but it's really growing on me. i think it kicks ass in a different way than runners four kicks ass. i was just noticing today what an unbelievably good sounding record friend opportunity is. the guitars are great, and the drums are blammo. there's so much space for everything to fit in it that it sounds huge and expansive. Members inkwachemis
my favorite album is theirs is Milkman I think its a bummer that they lost their 2nd guitarast and i do think it affects their live show. for one thing, the singer has to focus more on holding down the bassline whereas she used to be able to run around and interact with the crowd more
