Members wacopacco
i'm gonna order Lamb Lies Down and Selling England, and i want to get 1 older floyd album. Either that or get another copy of Animals (my favorite Floyd album, but it's all scratched up)... which one is the best?
Members trlkvsky
I'm not a huge Floyd fan to begin with, but I do respect their early creative output quite a bit. Get Umma Gumma for the live disc. And Piper at the Gates of Dawn for a good appreciation of Syd Barrett.
Members johnrambo
if you want pre dark side i recommend meddle but if you don't a have a properly working copy of animals that comes first.

Word to the wise, never get one of those multi-cd carrying cases. The tops of the cd's get scratched, and thats the fragile part. I dont know why they dont protect the tops. YOu scratch the top, the film comes right off then you can actually see through the disk and it skips like crazy
Members capnbringdown
Ummagumma is fantastic for thelive sound. The studio side is okay, but not as good as the live side IMO. If you don't have a copy of Meddle, you should get that. How scratched is your copy of Animals? Maybe you could just make a copy of it. Sometimes computer cd-roms can tolerate more scratched up discs then cd players. Atom Heart Mother is also a great floyd album that not too many people talk about. I'd say either pick up Meddle if you haven't heard it, or if you have the scratch and don't mind a video, get the Live at Pompeii concert. It's pre-DSOTM. Actually, the director's cut includes some making of DSOTM. I don't remember if there was an audio only version of this, probably. It'd make sense, but I'm not sure. I'd still recommend the video version anyway.

Members capnbringdown
I like the studio version of Echos more. The version of Saucerful of Secrets is the highlight from Pompeii IMO.

Members wacopacco
i'm gonna try copying Animals to see if it reads it. My computer usually reads all my scratched up cd's so i think it will work, and i'll go ahead and get Meddle along with the 2 Genesis albums. Thanks for the responses guys
Members Craise
They are all worth owning. All very very good...Meddle will be your most radio friendly..and well known. It would be very easy to say that one or Syd's Pipers at the Gates of Dawn. But my favorite is the one right before DSOTM and get's very little mainstream floyd fan cred...but's one of if not my favorite Floyd of all time.Obscured By Clouds..check it out. Some Songs are very ambient and some are straight up acoustic songs.Radiohead worships this lp. Members DOUBLE J64
For me? Wish you were here, but maybe I just like the sid-ish material. Not his personal stuff persay, but I do have his solo albums here somewhere.Madcap laughs is better that some of his stuff with the Floyd, but he was way on his way out by then. Acid and shicz doesnt lend itself to nice-ness

Members Teh Bacons
Obscured by Clouds is good, but Free Four ruins the whole thing for me. That has to be the gheyest floyd song of all time IMO.

Members PFDarkside
Damn, tough choice. I love Animals, but I think Meddle is my favorite Floyd album. I'd get both. Actually, add on Saucerful and Piper too while you're at it. Seriously, Meddle.

I have to agree with this. It was written as a movie soundtrack and was widely panned by critics, but Obscured by Clouds is a lovely bit of pastoral psychedelia; definitely one of their most underrated albums. And it predates a lot of musical trends, especially the psych-folk that is becoming increasingly trendy these days.
