Want To Get This Sound For Under $50

I'm kind of skeptical of asking this question because I know that most of you guys have high-end pedals... but here it is :thu:

How do I get that sound for under $50? I'm guessing it's a fuzz? I have no clue. Here is her equipment.

Gibson semi-hollow->???->Fender Twin

Here is my setup.

Gibson LP->Valveking

I know the cleans of the valveking are nowhere near the twin. But hopefully the fuzz will color the tone enough so that no one would notice.

Any suggestions are recommended.

Thanks:D

That sounds to me just like an overdriven tube amp, or an overdrive designed to sound like a tube amp. There are plenty of inexpensive pedals that try to do this; some will work better with your LP than others. I'd suggest the Digitech Bad Monkey, Nobels ODR-1 or Behringer Blues Overdrive.

Incidentally, I don't believe that her Gibson Chet Atkins guitar is even in that mix. I'm fairly sure all of the guitar that you hear is the Tele player.

You should be able to get awfully close to that tone using your LP and the drive on your Valveking.

Her tele just plays single lead notes. I'm sure that it's her playing the rythmn part.

I don't know about my gain. It's pretty harsh and that sounded nothing like mine. It was like 50x more saturated/smooth. So is that an overdrive pedal? I was looking at the Digitech Bad Monkey...

I would've said Single Coils or P90s -> Tubescreamer or similar Overdrive -> Fender clean tube amp or just about any clean amp with the treble up.....

but she's playing a semi-hollow, and that just confuses the hell out or me o.O

but your best bet would be a booster or cheap overdrive. I'd say either the bad monkey or danelectro FAB overdrive (surprisingly good)

Her record is pretty solid all around. I am a real skeptic when it comes to new music. Up until about 4 years ago, I could honestly say I didn't like any pop/rock music from anyone who didn't have a hit record prior to 1992. The two exceptions so far are Norah Jones and her.

You should check that out. I think she's absolutely great. Also, incredibly inventive.

Haha, this is so weird. I've always hung out at the amp forum and I can't believe I'm talking about pop music. =] Glad to see that there are other people like me.

Norah Jones is one of my favorite by far. Her new album is just like a continuation of her old. Pretty neat.

So here are some suggestions...

Norah Jones
John Mayer
Jack Johnson
Corinne Bailey Rae
KT Tunstall
John Legend
Alicia Keys

That should last you a good while :thu:

Well, thanks for the suggestions on the pedal. I've always been wanting to get a tube screamer but they're so expensive and I wanna be a little different than everyone else. Guess I'll go with the Bad Monkey.

In real simple terms (the only ones I understand - perhaps someone with good technical knowledge can further explain) tubescreamers tend to sound better with single coils than humbuckers anyway.

Tubescreamers sound like a blend of your clean tone and some dirt. When you run a loud signal into it, the clean side of things gets louder than the dirt side of things, and it tends to sound like a midrange heavy clean boost with the highs and lows dulled a bit. This is actually quite useful if you're trying to hit a tube amp with a powerful signal to make it distort, but into a really clean amp it's not the most pleasant tone.

That said, the Bad Monkey works differently, and is pretty friendly to humbuckers. It will probably work better with your LP than, say, an Ibanez TS-7 would.

I still don't think the primary guitar tone in that clip is coming from her Chet Atkins.
