From the Zvex site:

"The Vexter Fuzz Factory is identical in construction to the newest hand-painted Fuzz Factories, including a DC power jack and on/off LED indicator. Because it is hand silk-screened instead of hand-painted, we are able to offer it at a somewhat reduced price!"

OK, so when I bought my Box of Rock down at Old Town Music in Portland, they had four BoRs - two of the USA handpainted ones, and two Vexters. I tried all four out and.............. everyone in the store thought the Vexters actually sounded a bit better. I came home the proud owner of a Vexter Box of Rock.

do you really think zvex would lie when a good number of his customers (boutique-inclined pedal users) are modders or pedal enthusiasts who could discern a difference in the components themselves by looking at them?

the paint must affect tone :)

He's definitely posted that they're the same damn thing elsewhere (same place those gut shots popped up), but he's also noted that Eric (who plays on the demos) "thought the Vexter [bOR] sounded a little better."

The guys at Truetone have said that as well...

Yes, Eric's comment was in response to a thread I had up stating that of the two hand painteds and the two Vexters, that I and the music store dude and a couple of customers all thought the two Vexters sounded slightly different from the hand painted ones and that we agreed that the Vexters sounded better to us. Then Zack jumped on the thread and mentioned what Eric said.

I'll have to try to dig up that thread. Can't even remember what forum it was on. It maybe over at the "other" forum.

I found the thread where Mr. Vex talks about Vexter vs. USA. It was back on Oct 4 over at TGP. I tried to link to it but it doesn't work so I'll just quote the posts here:

Me

"I came home today with a Vexter BOR! Just in time for a rehearsal with the band and I gotta say I'm lovin it! I already had an OCD v1, Guv'nor Plus, HBE Big D, and a Shredmaster but was looking for a OD/dist that really felt and sounded like an amp channel. I believe the BOR does it! Still in honeymoon period though so will relay my thoughts as I get to know this shiny new addition.

OK, here's the contentious part. The shop I got it from had 2 hand painted BORs and 2 Vexters. We plugged them all in and A/B/C/D'd them. Present at this session was me, the shop keeper dude, and another customer. And we all agreed that the 2 Vexters sounded different than the 2 Myrolds. So, for those who are worrying about the Vexters not sounding as good as the USA ones.... we all agreed that we liked the Vexters better soundwise! Hard to really describe the difference, cause it wasn't like a night and day thing, but the Vexters seemed more present, yet sweeter and thicker. The USA ones were a slight bit more brittle feeling perhaps. All three of us not only listened but took turns playing guitar through them and ended up with the same assessment. Now, we didn't go swapping batteries or anything like that; we just used whatever battery the pedals were shipped with so maybe that could explain some of the difference.

It's definitely JTM45 sounding and feeling and not plexi or 800 but that's what I was looking for. Anyways, time to get back to rockin this box up."

Mr. Vex

"my long-time friend Erik Sexe tests all fuzz factories and all box of rock pedals for us (as well as does demos at the NAMM show) and he had the same reaction. he got the first batch of Vexter BORs into his bedroom where he does all of the testing and called me immediately and told me that they were more present and more "rock" than the US versions. i absolutely cannot explain this. i sent them the parts to put the pedals together. the only thing different they did was to find a couple of expensive caps to filter the high-end down. something i never thought would count. hmm. maybe it's the high-temperature RoHS lead-free solder. maybe it's the ultra-cheap disc ceramics. maybe it's the burnt wire because of the RoHS solder's high-temp melting point. or maybe it's that there's nine fantastically driven women running that company in Taiwan and they simply will not stop unless every damned pedal they produce sounds better than anything coming out of anywhere. i don't know, i can't explain, and i have to say, i'm super-proud that my Taiwan team was able to beat my long-standing US team in sound quality. i'm just stunned.

Vexters are silkscreened instead of handpainted, and come with a smaller warranty (2 years instead of lifetime)

Origonally the Vexters were made in the US alongside the painted ones, which has since been changed to outsourcing overseas

Z did mention a couple of very minor component changed with the overseas stuff, just due to the availability of certain values and types there, which do exactly the same job as the parts they replace

yeap, you can get your SMD zvex pedals out of asia for $200 or you can get your SMD behringer pedals out of asia for about $20...

you can get a steak with a mushroom and wine sauce in the USA for $20 or a McD's cheeseburger in the USA for $0.99.
