RHCP: Funky Monks: Guitar or bass?

Anyone who has blood sugar sex magik, can you tell me if the very beginning part is a guitar or a bass? My guitarist swears its bass, but it SOUNDS like fresciante is doing his 'I'm-almost-playing-slap-bass-on-guitar' thing. And it's got that strat-ish quack to it.

On a side note, I know they do it with bass live, but on the album is the question.

Any thoughts?

On a side note, no, they don't do it with bass live. To hit the high notes while doing so would require slapping a bass at the 22nd fret on a five-string bass, which would just sound like crap. Alternately, it could be played on a 6-string bass with the highest note on the 17th fret, which would sound only slightly less {censored}ty. Flea also doesn't play 6-strings.

Also, it wouldn't make any sense for it to be the bass, because the guitar part in the intro is the same part as the guitar part in the verses. If the bass played it, then there would be no guitar part on the verses and two basses...on the record, Flea played a 5-string on Funky Monks, and he's playing way low down the neck, mostly the low G and occasionally down to the C on the low string.

The only two times they've played it live were in Denver (USA) on August 18th and in Milano (Italy) on November 30th. I suppose they could've played it more, but I am positive the first time they've played it ever was in Denver. Partly because Anthony said they've never played it before.

In Denver, if you watch the big screen, John is playing it. You can tell when Flea comes in pretty easily.

Also, this is just cool:
