New Bloc Party

I was walking thru Target on Tuesday and a buddy of mine called me to tell me about Band of Horses coming to town, and also mentioned "oh hey I think the new Bloc Party is out". I hadn't heard anything. I knew a couple tracks had been getting played on XM... just didn't know a release date.

Wandered over to the music section and picked it up.

Kinda surprised no one has mentioned it yet. I know there was some love for the last album.

I'm still warming up to it. I don't really like the production.. it's abit too produced. They went from one extreme to the other with the first being abit too thin for my taste and this being abit too thick. And like the first it's got it's hit and miss tracks IMHO. Definately a couple new guitar tones there for leads... some old ones as well.

Any thoughts?

I posted a thread about this a few days ago. I love it in that guilty pleasure kind of day.

Man I missed that... I should have been paying more attention. :D

I grabbed the Dinosaur Last night when whoever it was posted it (thanks for that btw).

Not sure how I feel about it. I can see how those who didn't like Without a Sound or Where You Been? might not like it, but it definately also has a vibe of something like Bug.

Interesting guitar tones. They tend to sound alot like the live rig he was using last year. I hear some cleans that I bet are probably from the AC30cc head he'd been using... they're just clean tones that you wouldn't have associated with him previously.

Losta different fuzziness too I noticed in comparison to Without a Sound or Where You Been?

Anyways.. yeah for the Bloc Party. I know it's kinda cheesy, but I like "I Still Remember"... that was the first new track I'd heard so it sticks out to me the most.

Got it back in November or something when it leaked, but went out the day it came out for real and dropped dollars on it. I'm pretty into the band in general, though, although it blows my mind how big they got and how fast...I saw them at the Black Cat in DC in 2005, and I don't think they'll ever play a venue that small again...whatever. It's also funny how badly Russell Lissack wants to be Jonny Greenwood (sort of).

The lyrics are cheesy more often than not, but you have to give Kele credit for being so uncleverly sincere. Plenty of amazing backing vocals courtesy of Matt and Gordy. And "Hunting for Witches" is a real powerhouse, from the samples that fade into the rhythm section to Matt's backing vocals, which surprised me when I realized all he was doing was saying "do do do do, do do do do do." Finally, I'm almost certain this album is going to make everyone and their brother go out and buy a Digitech Whammy. Hell, I want to (not that I didn't want to before).

Listening to Dino Jr's "Beyond" now. The production's cleaner than You're Living All Over Me or Bug. Too clean for Mascis? Probably, but you really can't expect anyone to use the same production values as they did almost 20 years ago. I'll make up my mind on the songwriting in the morning...:)

I listened to the myspace "leak" the other day and I was impressed. I totally thought they were going to be a "one album wonder" band, just repeating the same formula. Props to any band trying to, at least, push their OWN boundaries...

I think I'll go buy it...

I think I'm going to have to find a way to get their first CD back from the bitch who stole it and moved to Florida too...

I like a lot of the music, but the vocals are pretty meh.

i think the vocals appeal to me cos he's so obviously from london, but not in a stupid cockney way, but i guess thats only good for me cos i'm from london.

Bloc Party = {censored}. Worst band going at present IMO. And the singer just has a {censored}ing aweful voice. Over hyped and soon to be wiped.

Nah. The Fratellis, The Kooks, Razorlight, The View, Kasabian, Little Man Tate, and all the other lad-rock {censored}e bandwagon-jumping bands are infinitely worse than Bloc Party could ever be. Bloc Party rise well above the rest of the NME-endorsed tosh.

Does Bloc Party get played at all on mainstream American radio? The only place I've heard them in pop culture is on that one Tony Hawk game...

That said, I think the new stuff is pretty good; its generally a departure from the dancerocl Gang of Four influence and a move towards well written, tension building pop songs, which I thought they were really good at on Silent Alarm (This Modern Love, Pioneers, etc).

I think Kasabian are ok. The rest are awful.

You're from Baltimore, and you play bass. If you want a new band, I know a Baltimore band that NEEDS a bass player bad. I just kind of left the band recently, and I'm trying to help them find someone new. PM if you have any sort of interest or questions. :)
