Members Lanefair
Yeah that's right, yesterday I was complaining about how OT this forum is, and now I'm being OT. HA! Ok, so anyways I took my lady out for a meal the other night somewhere really nice and it cost me a fair bit. Anyway I paid by card and they couldn't give me a receipt because of a malfunction or something, but they did give me a print off of the bill. Anyway over a week has passed and my account hasn't been debited. Those things are usually instantaneous right? I don't know if I should expect it to come out soon, or confess, or just leave it. If I'm honest, I really need the money (despite the fact I planned on spending it anyway). Thoughts?
Members wwhhaatt
Did you tip with cash or on thecard?
Members Lanefair
On the card. So technically I haven't tipped at all. The service was excellent as well...
Members theweight
Sometimes credit card machines can go down for long periods of time at restaurants. If they have any record of it, rest assured you'll be billed. It might just take awhile. I bartended for years, and everyonce in awhile that happened. It's possible that the credit card machine went down for a short bit, and ever since then they've either been too busy to input the old sales, or the manager has just been too lazy. If it was me, I'd consider the money as spoken for just to play it safe, at least for a month.
Members english_bob
How much over a week are we talking? From previous experience working in a bank, it quite often takes 3-4 working days for card transactions to show on your statements, longer I think if your bank isn't a "clearing bank" (the big ones are- NatWest, HSBC etc, the smaller/newer ones aren't, they just use the big banks systems for this).I think part of the process is dependent on the retailer sending information to the bank, which I believe is sometimes a manual process, which means that human error and laziness can be a factor. I would wait a LOT longer before you assume you've had a free lunch Legally, I don't know where you stand on this- it's not as though they can come find you if it turns out their card machine didn't debit you properly- that's not your fault, or your problem. It IS your problem if they DO bill you later, and you've already spent that money on something else
Members mumford
Legally, I don't know where you stand on this- I'd say it's fair to say that money is theirs, whether it comes out today or 3 months from now.
Members Daeveed
Yeah, I've had restaurants bill my credit card days, and sometimes weeks after I paid. I'd say if after a month you haven't been charged, then it's safe to assume you won't, and it's up to you to decide what to do with it (ehem..pedal...ehem). Members fernmeister
from my experience, it could easily show up even a month later. play it safe.
Members Lanefair
Ok I'd better wait this one out. But just to confirm, this was a regular bank card, not a credit card. And in my experience things on a regular card show up around 3 days later max. There must be a law against delaying a payment for an extended period of time. If every service provider did this you'd never know what state your account was in.

It's up to the customer to keep a log and know what is and isn't available. At the same time, it makes sense to think any business wants their money quickly, so if they haven't put it through in a month you're probably fine. Members Hanglow
I imagine if there is a law on that it would be a matter of years (like claiming back bank charges)

Members GreenGhost
It will get debited. They wrote down your card number because the machine wasn't working. Just wait awhile. I did this all the time, as I used to be a cashier. Write down the number and amount and the boss will type it in when he's not being lazy. Members The*Ataris
I can't think of too many situations where a business (large or small) would let their CC machines go 24 hours without functioning. Repair service is really quick in my experience... Ours are batched out every night or else there are immediate issues with our Point-of-sales software--a real pain in the ass. I suppose that's probably not true for everyone though... Yeah, I'd say give it to the end of the month...
