Hi everyone,

Some months ago I purchased a ZOOM G2.1 and I have been very happy with it.

I must admit I haven't spent too much time on it yet, and right now I think the effects are really great, but I'm not very happy with the distortion sounds ....

(Well, the unit is already well worth its price just for the effects, even if I won't use the distortion).

Maybe it is just a matter of tweaking until I will fond good distortion sounds with it?!

What do you think ?

Anyone who has the G2 or G2.1 has any advice on getting a good distortion sound with it?

Should I put it infront of my amp or use my amps effects loop?

Any help/advice welcome !

Thanks in advance,

Lars

i use my g2 mainly for playing at church to go into a DI box straight into the board. i also use it in front of an old 6 watt fender bronco. i turn everything off and then choose my dist. sounds. then i just add w/e fx i want. i like the peavey model, mesa model, and one of the marshall models. i can get some pretty sweet tones with those, so i think you just need to spend more time tweaking and messing with it. and i just put it in front of the amp (with EQ and cab modeling off). the only thing on is a little delay and the dist. sometimes chorus or auto wah.

Yeah - my G2 gets used mostly straight in too - when I tried it with a couple different tube amps I have it sounded like crap even when using their live presets. Soeone else told me to set up my own presets as they're all geared to SS amps more but I find with tube amps a simple TUBESCREAMER and maybe a distortion pedal (I'm using a Boss DS-1 right now but ain't really in love with the sound I get from it) sounds better than using a multi-effect unit - at least with the tube amps. I use it sometimes with my 2 SS amps but it still sounds "tinny" - so as a straight DI into my Mac G5 I can get some cool sounds. I also discovered that by using an AMP as my computer speakers (I run the LINE OUT to my Amp with a 1/4" -> 1/8" adapter and a guitar cable into my amp) I can turn the stuff up and get some different sound - BIGGER SPEAKERS!!! :) And I can get a Dual Rectifier coming out of a 1963 Acetone Duetto (my Avatar)

I've owned a few Zoom multi-fx units over the years and I can honestly say that I've never been too awfully impressed with their distortions. I've heard that the newer 7.1t & 9.2tt units are pretty good, but I can't see the distortions on the 2.1 being that great. Don't get me wrong, the other effects in it like the chorus, phaser, delay, etc... are all decent and totally usable, but their gain sections have never seemed to quite cut it for some reason.

When I had the GFX-8, I just ran a distortion pedal through the fx loop. Maybe a Marshall Jackhammer, Line 6 Uber Metal, or something like that might work a bit better in front of it. Mind you I've never tried the G2 so it could be that they've improved a lot over the last few years, I dunno.

Today I spent some time checking out some patches posted on a G2.1 Yahoo group, and some of those sound pretty good.

So, I did find some good distortion sounds, but I'm still not 100% happy with it.

Still need to spend more time on tweaking and trying different things ......

I gotta admit I bought a G2 quite a while ago and its been out of the box about 5 times, I really couldnt get along with it, thought the distortions were pretty crappy and the navigation through effects was a pain

in the end I bought a ME-50 and am now selling the G2

I've visited the Yahoo Zoom site, and copied a few of the settings offered on there. The Thrash one sounds kiiiiiiiiiiiiiiler thru my tube amp. Totally different from my dirty side where I run my TS9.

My only problem is whether I run it into the front, or into the back (effects loop in) I can't turn the volume past one or I get this funky muted volume drop on each pick stroke.

TBH...I really only bought it for:

Practicing with headphones

PC recording

Running Reverb in my effects loop

So anything past that is gravy for me.

But...when I hear some of the clips from POD XT owners...I sometimes think I made a bad purchase...(that RATM clip was noice!!!!)

I have a G2.1u and I love it. I've read many user reveiws that complained about the lead tones and I'm surprised by that. I've spent some time tweaking mine and have gotten some great tones with no problem. I particularly into the classic Santana tone and have been able to get pretty close to that. There are a lot of parameters available to shape your sound - compression, eq, amp model, etc. If you're willing to get in there and do some tweaking you can probably get what you want out of it.

Yep, the number of people complaining about Zooms (and other MFX too) seems to show they don't know how to use them.

"My distortion doesn't work, it is too fizzy, too bassy, has no sustain, is muddy and doesn't cut through ... G2 (G7, G9) sucks" :blah:

= too much gain + input in the guitar preamp, cab sim on with a 4*12 closed back cab, noise reduction up to 16, sound drowned in effects, v shaped equalisation :freak:

Just read the manual, please !

MFX are not the same as stomboxes ... :D

not pedal users maybe?

Not much.

I built some and tested a few, but it's better having a MFX if you are trying to find your favourite sounds (what I am doing with my electric violin), then you can go the stompboxes way.

(Very good for GAS addicts :p)

I'm not into the debate comparing analogic to numeric, maybe MFX will always sound too perfect = digital (I mean it, for the particular taste / feeling of analogic stompboxes is due to a different behavior in different conditions ).

But I can't understand the sniping from peple who are just too lazy to use other patches than the presets, who don't know how to amplify an MFX, who don't even care to read the manual ...
