Members #16 Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 ???As in vinyl? Extended play. More than an A and B side. Usually 3 tracks or more.
Members seifukusha Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 i thought it was extra player? makes sense that way though
Members bluehuricane Posted February 26, 2007 Author Members Posted February 26, 2007 oh... so why do people use it on their first, shorter cd? also, what does lp mean? not as in les paul, but i see it on cd's too

Members MorePaul Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 oh... so why do people use it on their first, shorter cd? also, what does lp mean? not as in les paul, but i see it on cd's too Long Play Basically, folks use it out of "industry habit" as a shorthand for a play length based on format consider that we call them "albums" -- well, back in the 78 days, the records didn't hold too much, so you would get a body of work in binders (or similar boxes) with multiple disks..an "album" of records, much lik a "photo album"
Members bluehuricane Posted February 26, 2007 Author Members Posted February 26, 2007 aha! so calling my 7 track cd that's coming out soon an ep is technically alright?
Members Zachman Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 aha! so calling my 7 track cd that's coming out soon an ep is technically alright? As long as there is 45 min or more of material you can sell it in stores for $20 as an LP
Members ArrMatey Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 I dunno, I'd make it a maxi-cd or mini-album. Both would fit well.
Members bluehuricane Posted February 26, 2007 Author Members Posted February 26, 2007 i think the rough copy is 37 minutes, it'll be a tad longer after an intro is added and such, but probably won't hit 45 minutes... darn...

You can still sell them off the stage for $20, 2 for $30. Sell them for ATM denominations, less hassle with making change.
Members Psychedelic Trip Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 As long as there is 45 min or more of material you can sell it in stores for $20 as an LP There's lots of LP's out now with less than 45mins. The first 2 Strokes albums only went for 30 In the 60's most of the records stayed under 45mins. You could really only allow for about 20mins on each side

You could really only allow for about 20mins on each side After Van Halen's Women & Children First Album, (only about 45 min) Warner Bro's got a bunch of slack about selling it as a full LP for full price so, nowadays to be sold at full price in a store through a distribution deal an full price LP is 45 min or more. The CD's now w/ less than 45 min are not sold for full price $20, unless they are a collectible of course.
Members FDZ Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 You also have to have a set number of tracks. The original cut of TMV's Frances the Mute was 77 minutes but only 5 tracks, so Universal refused to pay them the LP rate until they diced it up into 12.

I always wondered why they cut up Cassandra Gemini like that.Speaking of cutting up, I like the Amputechture joke of cutting the songs (and album) short/abruptly. They usually always have a flow from one song to another, but this album was all about abrupt endings. The album even ends mid-phrase/note on the up of an attack. funny guys.
Members The*Ataris Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 As long as there is 45 min or more of material you can sell it in stores for $20 as an LP That's entirely incorrect... EP stands for extended play 7", which would equal 20 minutes or less of music. LP stands for "long play" and is anything between 21 and (traditionally) 40 minutes. Of course, these are nostalgic terms used to describe the capacity of vinyl records, but they still apply... Our EP, that's currently being mastered, is just over 19 minutes long with 5 and a half songs. 37 minutes is DEFINITELY and LP...

Believe me, when all this is done, I'm going to be so relieved. It's taken forever to record and mix it (my expectations are higher than my abilities ). It's being professionally mastered right now, could be done tomorrow! Had to sign a $1200 to a print company today that's going to do the replication, inserts, shrinkwrapping, etc. Ouch...

Members The*Ataris Posted February 26, 2007 Members Posted February 26, 2007 How many copies??? Distribution deal??? or Sell yourself??? Either way congrats. We're doing 1000, which is almost absurd considering how new we still are to our music scene (first release), but I think we should at least make our money back pretty quickly. Unforunately, a run of 500 would have been about a grand so it was almost a no-brainer to spend another $250 to double it.The artwork is really slick (drummer is an incredible artist), four panel full color insert with lyrics, clear jewel cases--should look really solid....which is important, because it might take the focus off of my really pedestrian recording This is an independent release to create some buzz and hopefully make us some money to put into the band this next year. There's a local label that wants to do a full-length with us this summer and are helping us every step of the way with this one. They do great work and we're honored...Lot's of promotion to do in the next month and a half though. About 40 of those CD's are going off to publications and radio right off the bat. We need some real press...

You have invites to send your stuff to the publications and radio already? Otherwise, they won't listen to it, and your effort will be in vein there. You probably do, and know that the legal depts will go off for unsolicited material, fear of allegations of copyright infringement and all.Ehh, you been around. They say, "Break a leg", I say, "Break theirs!"Rawk on Rock dawg

They're all going to local stuff who review local bands--nothing too serious. College radio and newspapers (we go to those schools), big daily papers, big weekly papers, local 'zines, etc. They will most likely have everything two full months before it's release party. From the advice we've recieved, it should be plenty of time... It is a learning experience for us though. We're youngins' and are discovering a lot about putting out music as we go. There's a lot to the business side of music that I never knew...
