Members PurpleStrat
They looked cool, but dude, it's just a Big Muff. Uhhhh.......no. It's WAY more scooped and heavy. Think of your Mammoth with more highs and sustain and you get close.
Members stereotypy
i still have it. and no it is not just "A" big muff. i have owned the russian ehx, the mayo, still have the top fuel and the icbm. well the russian muff (old version) and the mayo were really quite the same.. a little difference but not much. the icbm is totally different. but i don't like it that much too (so i sell it). and the black pearl is definately apart from the others too!! but i still keep it though it is not on my board.. but it has that woooms no other muff has.. Don't worry PurpleStrat - I'm still taking very good care of your Black Pearl The BP is my number 1 fuzz/distortion, and while others have come close (green muff, modded american muff, vintage muff, scod, and others) nothing has been able to bump it off my board yet. It's just such a thick sound that still has definition and a great EQ - what more could you want!? Actually - that's why I have 2 black pearl's... 1 is hidden away just in case
Members stereotypy
does yours cut through in the mix? when i played it i always boosted it with my tubescreamer.
Members dopey1978
does yours cut through in the mix? when i played it i always boosted it with my tubescreamer. Not too well - that's why I run an MXR Preamp after it. I keep the volume low on the BP and boost it up with the MXR (seems less noisy that way) and then use the tone on the MXR to add just a bit of mid-range to it. It's a great combo and I don't find that I lose any of the tone, especially the bass, of the BP. It also give a nice compressed fuzz-face like decay to the notes, which I really like. Members PFDarkside
I like mine. The scoop on this compared to other Muffs is huge. I haven't used it in a band context though, I could see it getting lost. It's just a monster for what I guess could be called stoner/doom/post-metal. I think you could get pretty close with other Muff clones with revised tone stack values, though.

Although it sounds better then that. I have tried it.

Members capnbringdown
Those DAM pedals seem pretty expensive. I should try one of them, but I think if I'm going to pay that much for another muff, I might as well just get a vintage piece. Isn't the black pearl a copy of the swollen pickle? I want another big muff, but if it can't do the standard big muff tone, then I don't want it. Not that I know how often they come up used nowadays anyways. I think you could get pretty close with other Muff clones with revised tone stack values, though. Someone out there has one with a switch to go from "classic pickle" to "mid-hump." I've only done two of those so far because it's a pain to wire up the extra parts, though. I might do more, but I think I'd have to redo the PCB to make it a little easier. I actually like both settings a lot...I guess it all depends on what you're going for.
