Just bought a compressor.. er.. now what? (Marshall ED-1)

i managed to pick up the marshall ED-1 compressor on the cheap recently, and it generally makes my appalling technique sound a little more 'proffesional-sounding', but it feels like i'm missing out on something.

i didn't think it was going to drastically alter the sounds i get, like a phaser or some other new pedal, but it somehow feels wrong that i've bought a pedal that doesn't make a weird/useful effect !!

so anyway, i've tried it post-Turbo Rat.. didn't care for the compression on the sound too much.. tried it after delays and reverb - interesting, but not really going to help out much unless i want some seriously long feedback on either.

compression after wah also doesn't really create any good sounds.. so it looks like it will be at the front of the pedal board straight after my guitar or volume pedal, being quite a boring but useful pedal. :p

as far as settings go i think i got the best sounds with the compression on about 1/4 (anything near half is very noticable), and with the attack on 0 and high/low control about 2 oclock to compress the highs a little more.

i actually had the output volume on it set below the bypassed signal, as i quite like that i can have a boost when bypassing that also pushes more high-end frequencies than when it's engaged.. especially good if you are doing high-octave tremolo picking solos and want more dynamics.

as far as the pedal itself. i'm really happy with it. all controls have tons of range and hence plenty of different sounds to be had. mega-evil compression to subtle.. i especially like the high/low control which gives more scope to what frequencies are compressed more than others. it's clear that on way all the highs are compressed and the other leaves them relatively untouched and the bass strings compressed. again this control has extremes at either end so the range of the control is excellent. i found myself playing with this control more than the others which were pretty much set and forgotten about.

i'm not sure other compressors in the range have this specific feature. in fact the alternatives in the glass case were the Line6 Constrictor, a small Guyatone one and the Behringer - apart from the behringer (obviously) it was about

yeah, pedalboard compression is kinda dumb in my opinion, as you would use house PA rack or studio compressors in actual settings where it woudl matter...but the way you have it as a "cut volume" reverse booster actually sounds like a decent approach...
