Members Surrealistic Brillo
...liking music that's different, unique and against the grain... When you tell them you're in a band, why is the first question out of their mouths pretty much always, "So, who do you sound like?" instead of "Do you have a CD I can check out?" Also, why are these same people shocked when you don't sound like your influences? They're "influences" not stencils.
Members bluehuricane
because people are assholes and most of them are too cheap to spend 10 bucks on your cd.

Members The Friendly Ranger
It's like Hendrix ripping on hippies for claiming to pursue their individuality while actually conforming to a certain image. That same deal continues on today with people getting tats and piercings to be different, just like all the other people who are doing it. If all the hippies cut off all their hairI don't care I don't care'cause I got my own world to live throughAnd I ain't gonna copy you
Members NITEFLY182
I usually counter the "what do you sound like" statement with "you probably wouldn't like it" which turns the tables in my favor.
Members Surrealistic Brillo
there ARE actually people who like unusual music that aren't pretentious assholes. just sayin'. Yes. I consider myself one of them. I studied 20th century composition in college and I play rock music. My listening tastes are very broad and while I tend to be of the opinion that pretty much everything that can be done with music within the realm of human hearing HAS been done and that context is more important than trying to chase this absurd notion of creating something no one has ever heard before, I do listen to music with an open mind and am more concerned with the artists creative objectives than worrying about whether or not I've heard something similar before. Many "indie" kids today are fooling themselves into thinking they're breaking new ground. All they have to do to realize this is listen to any non-mainstream music that was put out 20-30 years ago. There's more Gang Of Four and Television rip offs out there right now than at any other time in the history of music. Some of them get context points for aping those two bands while appearing to play Simon & Garfunkle or Donnovan tunes. In any case I get grief from my rock friends for being too "trained", grief from my "indie" friends for being too "pop" and grief from my friends who play symphonic and chamber music for being too "rock". I just happen to find all their little constructs to be too limiting. In my mind rock is a pretty flexible format and I prefer it stay that way without bogus classifications and descriptives being placed on it by music critics struggling (and failing) to categorize the experience or industry folks who need to create a marketing niche. Members Surrealistic Brillo
yep - its co-ed on the grad level... i think some members of deerhoof went to school there. Ahhhh. I see. Yeah...I never did go on to get my music degree. I dropped out after 3 years to start playing in bands. I have thought of going back, but I'm in a good place creatively and I've managed to continue to study on my own over the years, so I have a hard time justifying the expense when I can use the money to keep my band on the road and get more life experience that way. Maybe when I retire I'll go back and finish that degree.
Members The Friendly Ranger
I don't know. It seems to me that a lot of people compartmentalize their lives with everything on tidy little shelves rather than embracing the overlap and leakage. People I knew in high school thought I was weird because I could listen to bands like Iron Maiden and AC/DC and at the same time enjoy music by Neil Diamond and Alabama. To me there's two kinds of music.... Country AND Western But seriously, I hear two kinds -- that which speaks to me and that which doesn't but may speak to someone else. When I was in a band, we use to say we were like the Beatles. Even though we were playing some "speed metal" at the time. We figured we'd let them cubby hole us in their own special way

Members BloodTypeBlue
I'm guilty of asking that question (though more often "what" instead of "who" do you sound like), but the last time I was asked that question myself I didn't know how to respond. Members Lanefair
Luckily for me comparisons about my band usually focus on my singers voice, which is a relief cause i hate people talking to me after a show about stuff like that. I'm sure supermodels love to talk about walking and turning when they get off stage.
