Members p00n
I'm picking up one from a forumite today, and was wondering if using active pups could cause it to lose its craziness since some people said stuff like buffers and boosts mess with its oscillation abilities etc.. Not that I can't find a use for it, I need a heavy rhythm fuzz primarily, but insane sounds are more than welcome Anyone?
Members andreas
I haven't tried the UF myself, so I can't provide any real-world experiences. But according to the schematic it shouldn't be bothered by pedals/buffers in front of it, or active/passive pickups, as there's a buffer stage in front of the fuzz circuit. /Andreas
Members utterhack
And yet experiments in the field do seem to indicate that placing a buffer before the UF-01 kills the oscillation madness.
Members andreas
Hmm, yes, I recall such discussions too. It is odd, as there already is a buffer right there... /Andreas
Members p00n
Thanks guy for the replies andreas, I've always wondered what a buffer stage before the fuzz circuit does technically. How does it cancel the effects of having pedals/buffers/active pickups before it?
Members english_bob
I can vouch for the fact that the UF doesn't do the crazy volume knob stuff if there's another buffered pedal in front of it. Everything else seems to stay the same, other than that, so you can still get it to produce oscillation tones alongside the guitar signal, but they don't respond to volume and tone knob or pickup changes as noticeably. I think it needs to be able to "see" the guitar to interact with it.Active pickups? I've never used them, so I don't know. I do know a guy who uses them, but I don't have the time to go try it out Assuming the active pickups aren't a problem, you can definitely set the Ultra Fuzz to give you a fairly conventional, non-crazy fuzz with the volume control full on, and have it get crazy when you back the volume off a little if you experiment with where you set the "gate" and "reso" controls. Members Zachman
Thanks guy for the replies andreas, I've always wondered what a buffer stage before the fuzz circuit does technically. How does it cancel the effects of having pedals/buffers/active pickups before it? Depends on the particular fuzz circuit. There are some effects devices that don't like to see the low output impedance of a buffer. These are typically discrete transistor designed fuzz circuits (such as the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face). They react better to the high impedance output of the guitar. In fact, the guitar output, cable and input stage of the Fuzz Face complete a circuit that is highly dependent of those 3 components to work correctly. Fuzz Faces clean up nicely when you roll back the guitar volume control... not so if a buffer is between the guitar and Fuzz Face input. So if you have a pedal board with a Fuzz Face on it , put it first! Other pedals may react the same way.
Members p00n
From the manual The RESO control works best with a passive guitar. If the control is turned up when playing a guitar with an active pickup, the volume control on the guitar cannot be used to control oscillation, or oscillation may not occur at all. =( so how's the basic fuzz on the ultra fuzz? I've heard it's muff-ish
