Order of effects, loops

First off, I'm new to this forum and it seems really interesting, I've already found a lot of valuable information on pedals, and here's a topic I haven't really seen covered (although I'm sure it has been, and sorry to anyone who is bored by the subject hah)

I've heard a lot of different opinions as to where to place certain types of effects in a chain, such as compression and buffer at the beginning or end, real time effects before/after delay etc.

Also, when is it helpful to put any effects before an fx loop? This always kind of confused me, because some of my pedals sound better in certain places while others are unaffected.
