4 years is old for a hdd. I tend to upgrade every 18 months.

When I'm buying new drives, I tend to use the rule of thumb that my incremental storage goes on whatever costs $100... right now, that's a 400-500gb drive (newegg). If you are on a really tight budget, 80-250gb drives are very cheap, but I recommend not getting that small a drive.

If the computer is going to be used for audio production, you almost certainly should invest in more than one hard drive.

If I were you and that drive has your O/S on it, id buy a new one asap and start moving your files across.

Storage is so cheap now, it's not worth taking the risk

Thanks for all replies. I just burnt a back up of everything. HDD Recovery reported 60 or so bad sectors. Repaired 20. Blue screen messages are 'kernel data/stack inpage error'. Sometimes it fails to boot 'primary master drive fails'. Reinstalling the XP didn't help.

It's an old machine Asus TUSL2C mb and 1200mhz Tualatin. Mostly internet/office purposes. I wonder if I can even hook up a 320GB hdd?

Any reason I couldn't?
