is the bypass on the DD-20 digital or analog?

Not for a digital delay it's not.

I thought that when digital boss pedals were turned off, the signal was directed through an analog buffer... I'm pretty sure the DD-3 is that way... and the PS-5...

could be wrong, but what would be the point of having a digital signal path if there is no effect?

Digital bypass would be as simple as telling the DSP chip not to do its voodoo on the incoming stream of ones and zeros that is the digital representation of your guitar signal, but instead pass it on to the D/A converter untouched.

Boss pedals have active analog switching with FETs, as stated above.
