I believe Television world be considered to be part of the early punk movement - which was before new wave. Though even defining them as punk seems off the mark. They were really out there on their own doing minimalist art rock with long guitar excursions.

A lot of these bands being mentioned, while all great and/or interesting, don't totally fall into the New Wave paradigm, but here's one that does:

Good call on the Joe Jackson!

 

The Vapors were already in my list. That was one of the first songs I thought of. When I was 11 I used to jump around playing air guitar to that song like a nutcase, never knowing that I was rocking out to a song about masturbation :o I still think the riffs and solo are brilliant :rawk:
