Distortion/OD pedals + Tube amps

How do pedals affect the tube sound? Do you retain the warmth or does it make your tube amp sound more like a solid state?

I am thinking about buying a pedal for stuff like Metallica and Ozzy but not sure what to buy for my all tube amp with an already very nice gain channel.

Help me!

I see you have a Traynor 50. I used mine today with a Bad Monkey in front. The Bad Monkey is great for two reasons. It gives you a mild bluesy breakup with just a stomp (or more if you like). Also, for the lead channel it adds more gain (if you want it).

I would try some more pedals, except this sounds good to me for now.

Also, the Traynor 50 sounds nice with an EQ in the loop. I have a fish and chips that works well enough. Pulling down the 800hz slider takes away the boxiness from the amp, especially at low volumes. At higher volumes the amp sounds good with or without it, but the tone change is great to have with the push of a switch.

I looked for a bad monkey one of the local shops but they were sold out. I want to try one out. Do you have the ycv50 or ycs50?

It depends on what pedal you use as to whether it gives you a solid state sound or not. It also depends on your amp. If your amp has a nice gain channel then you could buy a booster pedal which will make your sound more agressive but not change your tone much. You could maybe try a treble booster, think early Judas Priest and the Accept album Metal Heart.

hmmm yeah i do have a nice OD channel I just swapped my 3 sovtek 12ax7WA's for JJ ecc83-s's and the gain is much more rich and punchy.. Get some real nice OD tones now. I turned the gain all the way up and hit the boost with level maxed and played Master of Puppets... sounded dead on. Especially with the scoop and modern switches on. Maybe I don't need a pedal now... :)

That's the ideal situation. I've got loads of dirt pedals but use them so infrequently now because I love the gain from my amps. I really only use them for a volume boost / EQ change now.
