Members Saturnine10
And what a disappointment. It was just not working with my rig.. I was using it along with the amps dirt channel and it just didnt sound good at all. I threw in an Eq to help clean some of the mids up, but i just couldnt get a good tone that i was happy with.. I have a peavey C50 with a high gain tube kit and V30 speakers.. Oh well, back to GC it goes..
Members killyridols
try using the muff w/ your clean channel. Big muffs are pretty high gain to begin with, not something you'll want to use to boost your dirt channel.
Members Saturnine10
Well, it sounded even worse by itself on the clean channel.. I dunno

Members Folky_Grunge
I used to have a NYC Muff. I ended up selling it, because it was either too muffled or too over-the-top sounding.

Members Fender&EHX4ever
My stock NYC had a pretty '70s metal sound - not my bag either. I had Ron at ronsound.com do the classic hairpie mod on it, and now I love it
Members The Villano Dude
not for you...I know what you mean, but it's a strange thing...you either dig the muff sound or not...not much middle ground.
Members Bangers n' Mash
I hated mine at first but I persevered with it, love it now. Works best first in the chain in my experience if thats any help.
Members tonedover
epic fail for even trying a muff type fuzz, or any fuzz for that matter, on a dirty channel from being an HC person you should know that .... anyways... maybe fuzz is not for you... apparently you like mind bending gain that covers all your mistakes, notes, tone, song, etc. or anything else that gets in the way.... Members Saturnine10
I was happiest with the tone about 1 oclock and the sustain at about 11-12.. Yea, its just one of those things that i guess doesn't quite work for me.. Now i want a BOR even more!
Members Saturnine10
I dont really like super heavy gain to be honest, it can get really mushy really quick and that just sounds like garbage. I make a lot of mistakes, big deal? Who doesnt? No need for me to hide my weaknesses as a guitar player with super gain. maybe fuzz is not for you... apparently you like mind bending gain that covers all your mistakes, notes, tone, song, etc. or anything else that gets in the way.... Members tonedover
im not trying to be a dick, just a lil funny at your expense in all seriousness, I just dont think that a fuzz was meant to be stacked with anything other than MAYBE an overdrive. really, shouldnt stack fuzz with distortion unless your amp keeps stuff really clean in the mix and even then, i would only stack a fuzz with distortion for a short lead in the "higher" neck regions for some nice distorted highs. ps I suck, so I really cant make serious fun of anyone
Members Saturnine10
Well, thats the thing.. I dont have my amps distortion up that high, if you can even call it distortion.. I'd say with it cranked on 11, it can get some moderately heavy overdrive, but i have it rolled back to 5-6 oclock because feedbacking becomes and issue (I play a hollow body) So adding it to the dirt channel wasnt a big deal.. The C50 just isnt a high gain amp, even with the "high gain" tube kit i added.. Perhaps i should start looking for a better amp to base my sound off of.. Members tonedover
hhmmmm in all honesty im not that familiar with your amp, which would help us figure out your needs. really not very high gain? would you consider your amps sound to be VERY clean with the gain low or off? or does it still get squishy at higher volume? example: my home made (like 1 watt) amp doesnt even have distortion, it just starts to break up at a certain volume or with a od. with a fuzz at high volume the breakup on the homemade amp and the nyc muff can sound a lil muddy to say the least. maybe it is the amp.... do you have a more mainstream amp or practice amp to try the fuzz out on?? i just dont want you to give up on that fuzz QUITE yet, as it is probably one of my favorite and most versatile dirt pedals ive ever messed with

It will need different settings for different amps. Like Tonedover, I also use a small amp that I custom built myself. To get my Big Muff to play nice with it, I turn the volume on my guitar down a bit, and have the gain set to minimum on the amp. I set the Big Muff to; Volume: 12:00, Tone: 12-1:00, Sustain: 9-12:00That makes it sound good on my custom amp. However, the same settings are just average sounding on my Marshall. Try some different settings on your C50. Something that may not sound quite right on another amp may sound perfect on your amp.

Members tonedover
BOR is a completely different animal than a fuzz so maybe you will like that i would still be curious to have you try it with one of your brother's champs so you can hear the difference... seriously, dont give up on the fuzz ".... you'll .... be ..... baaaaccckkk!!!!!......" Members 88mm
I like a Muff into distortion. It just sings for leads and is still a little raunchy. It can sound too compressed or muffled if not set right or with different equipment though. I believe Smashing pumpkins pushed some higher gain amps with a Big Muff and that sh*t is GREAT. I guess what I am trying to say is....Spend some time with it. Tweak some dials, try it clean or dirty and live with it for awhile. It takes me some time to find just where new things fit. You keep mentioning the BoR - what kind of sound are you trying to get out of the Big Muff? The Big Muff is a thick, woolly fuzz. No matter what you do you won't get a BoR sound out of it.
