Members FedExPope
Im totally digging single coils now, and I like the look of older teles with the wood grain. I dont care if its an RI, btw.
Members Tomodachi
Aside from the usual used MIA Teles, Highway 1's, I'd look into the Classic Player Baja Tele. Very traditional tele. I bought one and I'm very happy with it. Alot of nice features (imo) like an ash body, broadcaster bridge pickup, "twisted tele" neck pickup (some don't like, but I do), soft v neck, 4 way switching with s-1, etc. Of course fit/finish will vary, so play it first if possible. I'd go for the Blond finish. I have the Desert Sand finish and it isn't doing anything for me color wise. No big deal though.

Members Abner Ragsland
this is quite geek territory that even i was wary about, but my band's guitarist has a thinline and had his humbuckers rewound - then added coil taps to both...and it sounds awesome. Members johanwastaken
Get a Fender Lite Ash Telecaster. Beautiful birdseye maple neck, Seymour Duncan pickups and a gorgeous vintage white finish. Plays beautifully.
Members juice
I'll second the Baja. I don't own one, but if I was in the market it is what I would buy, hands down.

Members gtrjones
50s classic, maybe with some tweaks (glendale saddles, GFS fatbody neck pickup, 4-way switch) would come in under $700, especially if you find the guitar used. Great classic tele tone, feel, looks.
