Pedal Volume????????????????

what do you normally set the volume knob on your pedals to?

I had always set mine to the 12 o'clock position but recently scored a pile of early 90s guitar mags (various titles) and in most of the diagrams they have for the songs tabbed the volume is set to about the 3 o'clock position......

then I checked out some in a recent issue on the news stand and three times I saw those diagrams with volumes set to the 10 o'clock position. Is it just a case of the same people running the mags and they are getting old and turning down the volume? Or is it just that the use of guitar in most mainstream stuff these days suck so their trying to do us a favor??????

I pretty much use a boss DS1 (distortion) for all of my playing (with my bands) and had always set my pedal volume to the 12 o'clock position. I didn't need to be louder or quieter then my clean tone...that doesn't matter when the pedal is on all the time. But I always felt the pedal only came to life when the dist. was set to at least the 3 o'clock position. When I set the pedal volume higher I didn't notice any changes volume or otherwise.
How is it that your volume can be louder with the effect on rather then off? Its controlling what the pedal lets through not what the amp puts out. That thought occurred to me today when I was reading how eq pedals work on the basis of subtracting rather then adding. I guess what I'm setting up here is for someone to go through and explain gain or something along those lines.
