Members RockNote
Here's what I would like: to be able to control the volume with a pedal from 0 dB up to the level set on the amp's master volume (not full bore!) At an in-between level, I'd like to be able to remove my foot from the pedal without effecting the volume. This setup is for those who want violin swells without decreasing saturation/overdrive. Has this been done? Does it actually work? Are there any drawbacks? Is it an easy mod/option for a boutique amp builder? Thanks
Members adamthemute
You could try placing a volume pedal after your dist/od. That might help a bit.

Well, I rely on preamp gain, so just putting the vol pedal after OD is not enough. Vol pedal in FX loop is a good suggestion, however introducing more cable with degrade the signal. By pointing towards the master volume, I am hoping for a control that stays out of the signal path. It may be that your average vol pedal won't do - I am not sure how exactly this design could be accomplished, but I feel certain it can be done. Members monkeyland
cable added in the effect loop should not be a concern really. your average effect loop should be at line level and well buffered.

Agreed. I do the same thing with a volume pedal with 20ft of cable on each side of the volume pedal (and a number of true bypass pedals in between). When I remove the cables from the effects loop and listen, it sounds exactly the same as when plugged in. No loss of tone. If you have an adjustable loop level, use it to get to unity volume. I'm 100% certain it can be done remotely, but no clue if anyone makes something like that though. And any custom system to do so will be $$$$. Do they make any rack mount units that can control volume? That can be put in the FX loop with short cables, then remotely controlled.
