OT: So I can't decide whether to get a new guitar or new amp head

I currently have a Single Rectifier head which I purely use to clean tones. Which might sound like sacrilege...but I use pedulz for teh gain. It actualy has a very underrated and good sounding clean channel IMO. I use teles with it and various dirt boxes. I've been toying with getting a Hiwatt Custom 50 for a long time, and they undeniably sound fantastic, are single channel, loud and clean...exactly what I need, and of course a great 'base' for pedals. However, getting a new guitar is undeniably more exciting. And I'm hankering over a Ricky 330/360 in Jetglo black. So help me make my mind up. I am pretty happy with my amps tone, but the Hiwatt would be just peachy. But so would an exciting new guitar.

That'd be good. But I don't even like the Mesa dirty sounds. The modern channel doesn't even work actually. I can only get Vintage. I'll probably just keep it for a backup, no one wants to buy a Recto nless the Red (modern) mode works and I'm too lazy/cheap to have it fixed. I got the Mesa very very cheap, and that's really the only reason I have it.

It is a tough call. My only reservation is the fretboard laquer. I dunno if I could get on with that. And the thing is...I'm so in love with the sounds of my teles, I'll just be wanting to sound like one, the whole time. Which is pointless. Teles seems like the only guitar I feel totally at home on.

Get the recto fixed and sell it to pay for part of the hiwatt. I have a Road King and have owned a triple rec and will tell you that the cleans suck compared to a Hiwatt. The only reason you are getting decent cleans is because you are using tele's, if you try anything with buckers the cleans are garabage.

Then why have the Mesa? The cleans on the Hiwatt will be 10x better. I had that Mesa and I thought the cleans were poor. I agree with the comment that the only reason you think it sounds good is because of the single coils you're using. Get the Mesa fixed, sell it and then you can have the Hiwatt and help fund the guitar.

Wow, I don't think it's a tough call at all. New guitars are always cool, but an amp is significantly more important to your sound. You've got some nice teles, there's no reason to buy another guitar when you could use a new amp.

Yeah, I think you're right. The only reason it sounds 'good' on the cleans is because of the pickups I'm using. I say good in inverted commas because next to anything renowned for it's clean tones, the mesa sounds shabby.

I just phoned Mesa's UK distributors and they've given me the number of a tech that is going to fix it for me. Once that's done, I'll sell it on, get the Hiwatt and also hopefully have some dosh left over for some other toys.

get the amp, and in the meantime you can have the mesa repaired and then sell it. After that, your gas might have changed. Personally I didn't like the ricky I heard. It is way too dark compared to a tele.

I'd got for a jazzmaster or something. That with a clean amp sounds like sex on the beach!

Yeah, I played a nice 66 refin Jazzmaster at Vintage & Rare last week. I do like Jazzmasters. I think finding a good one could be the perfect foil for my telecaster. It's certainly a nice idea.

Oh, here's the guitar I played. Go check it out ArrMatey.

I was just gonna go into town today. I'll go and check it out. I'd love to get a new amp and a new guitar although I don't really need it. Damn GAS

Give us some news once you've got the new gear. Hiwatts are sexy. If you wanna check out a good hiwatt place, check wild guitars in Highgate, they are a small repair shop but the owner is a specialist in Hiwatt in N6 4ER.

Do they stock a lot of Hiwatts? I've heard about this shop in Highgate off of a couple of people, but never been up there. I might pop up there today, I'm at a bit of a loose end.

I always imagined that when I eventually bought one, I'd get it from Music Ground. Well, a new model anyway. Hadn't really considered an old one.

Just give them a call and see. If you get an old one, you can get some original sweet sounds. Heck, you should try the sound city amps as well. I know it doesn't say hiwatt on it but before Hiwatt, Reeves used to design the sound city amps and they sound very similar and are cheaper.

Yeah. I'm a bit of a tool when it comes to gear. I'd rather have a brand spanking new one, and they are being built fantastically nowadays and do sound amazing. I also understand that some of the older Hiwatts aren't exactly incredible. But I'll definitely check it out.

The best judge is the ear in this situation but I can understand your worry about older amps.
