haha damn you guys, talk me out of it!!!

that would be four guitars. do i need that many? probably not. and i am NOT letting go of any of my guitars. i love them all.

i origionally played the singlecut jet today at guitar center and almost died from awesome. it is such a great playing, sounding, and looking guitar.

then i spotted the double jet on CL and almost crapped myself. i would prefer the single too, but that double is sexy, and its the same damn thing.

like what.

lots of things. the build quality on those MIC gretches is really low. my first choice would be: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Tribute-by-GL-ASAT-Special-Plus?sku=511114 (used). some of those epiphone hollowbodies are cool. electra les paul copies can still be found cheap and they're great guitars. there's other cool stuff too.

...not to blow most of my tax return on this:

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/msg/602710142.html

I've got a black Pro Jet - basically identical except it's a single cutaway - and I can't say too much negative stuff about the guitar, but I'll give it a go:

1. It's heavy. Despite the chambered body (circular routing cavities beneath the top - not a true hollow or semi-hollow), it's up there in heft with a good Les Paul.

2. The Bigsby needs to be tweaked, it could use a graphite nut, and it could use a roller saddle... unless you don't plan on using the bar a lot and / or you don't mind going out of tune a bit...

3. MIC if that matters to you.

4. Uhh, there is no four....

Seriously, that's about it. The tuners are overseas repros, but it stays in tune reasonably well - if you don't use the bar a lot. The pups are little monsters, with the ability to grab classic Gretsch flavored chime and jangle, but also crunch up nicely. The neck is a bit on the large size, but not unreasonably so, and it feels pretty good in the hand. The finish is actually pretty nice.

I like mine a lot, but I'm definitely going to have those things I mentioned done to mine...

okay, thanks for the feedback guys. i played the single cut version today at GC and after that i found the ad i posted. some things:

1. i never discredit ANYTHING because of where it is built unless i have played it. i can understand having experiences with crappy chinese guitars, but i have with crappy american, japanese, indonesian, etc...

2. i found the weight to be a relief, ironically. i was worried the guitar would be too light making it feel cheap. i like my guitars to have some heft to them, it contributes to sustain (on a well designed guitar) and it gives me the impression that the guitar is well made and sturdy. thats the impression i got from the pro jet.

3. i think bigsbys look great, but my thought was always that it was something i probably wouldnt find too much use for, otherwise i would have stuck one on my tele already! however, i was messing around with it at the store and i noticed that i could find some cool things to use it for, and that the guitar stayed in tune amazingly well. a graphite nut would probably send this baby over the top, but it stayed in tune way better than many other whammy or bigsby equipped guitars i have played.

4. the pickups sounded really really nice. i played the guitar through a fender blues deville, a 1964 fender vibrolux (really crappy), a vox handwired combo, and a fender super reverb. with overdrive, they were sparkly and had a great bite, but they were really articulate and full sounding. with cleans, they were spanky and clear. amazing clarity, without harsh treble. the neck pickup seemed to be a little quieter than the bridge, but it still sounded fantastic. the controls worked well, i liked the sound of the bridge pickup with the tone control on full, and rolled back just a little bit. seems like that would be a good setting if i wanted to sit back in the mix a little. overall, i think the electronics were fantastic.

5. it looks amazing. seriously. bottom line.

in the end, i think i will be happier with the single cut version. that double cut is tempting, but i already have a few expensive purchases coming up, so i can sit on this and wait it out. im going to berkeley on wednesday, so i will go poke around starving musician and blue note music to see if they have any gretsches. im gonna spend a little more time with it to see if i can find any reason why i shouldnt own it.

keep the feedback coming. i appreciate the input for those of you who have played or owned one.

im pretty sure they arent painted with lead paint...

i went to a different guitar center today (concord) and they had the same model there, only completely screwed.

the strap pins were missing, as wast the cap on the toggle, and the spring for the bigsby.

i said WTF and took it over to a salesperson and said how much for this hunk of junk?

he said, "hunk of junk? thats a gretsch!"

and i said, "look at the damn thing!"

so he said he could sell it to me for $388.00

i said "haha" and left. they couldnt even replace the missing parts! ugh.

as if that wasnt bad enough, i went into one of their isolation rooms to play with the mesa lonestars, and EVERY SINGLE ONE was messed up. one of them just hummed loudly, no signal. one of them had blown tubes. one of them just wouldnt turned on. all plugged in, working cable, etc...

yikes. they need to STEP IT UP.
