CRUNCH BOX MOD

Just found this over on TGP:

crunchbox_mod.JPG

It was a simple mod really - no schematic needed. There is a small trim pot on the circuit board. It is a 20k linear taper trimmer. I ordered a 16mm Alpha 20k linear taper pot (part number 313-1000F-20K) from Mouser Electric, removed the trimmer pot, and wired the new pot to the circuit board in it's place. (the arrow indicates where the trimmer pot was located). The sweeper (center lug) of the trimmer is easy to identify (it's the one closest to the top edge of the circuit board). Be sure to connect the center lug of the new pot where the center lug of the trimmer was connected. The other two terminals have no polarity (you can wire it to have the pot increase presence in either clockwise or counter-clockwise direction).

This is an ingenious idea IMO .... bringing that trimmer outside would make this pedal a whole lot more versatile.

According to the MI Audio site:

Internal presence control for adjusting the 'shape' of the Crunch Box's sonic footprint.

According to the guy who did the mod:

It definitely can sweeten the tone if you have an amp that lacks top end. It also makes it more chimey with single coils IMO. Stock, the trimmer is at 12:00. I moved mine to about 9-10:00.

According to me:

It's a presence control. More top end or more bottom end.

interesting, I was thinking about this the other day for my GI fuzz, but I'm scared in case I {censored} it up.....I would cry bad.

Me too.... I'm thinking about contacting the guy to find out what he did exactly.

it looks even easier to do on the GI, because the trimmer is kind of hanging off the edge of the board, you could have a foot controlled gain knob then, that would be really cool.

Very interesting mod though i wonder if perhaps it might negatively impact the resell value. Not that you will ever sell that pedal. :poke:
:)

This is true. I  my Crunch Box.

Really though ... I think it might help the resale if it was marketed right. I mean ... any mod that makes the pedal better would theoretically help its value for someone who's gonna play it, right? I mean ... for a collector it probably would lose value ... but for the player -- only helps IMO.

That was essentially what I was thinking too.

I could see that being useful if your using it through a bunch of different amps, otherwise it seem unecessary.

This is an interesting ... and likely intelligent comment. I hadn't thought of it that way... perhaps I should spend more time with my present trimmer to see precisely what changes occur when it's moved.

or perform the mod and get more for it when you sell it because it has a 'boutique' mod done to it
;)

I'm never selling mine, it will be left to my children. :)

I dunno if the 'Chuck Norris Manc Mod' would increase it's value too much on ebay anyway!!
