Members MetalChimp
One of the tubes in my Fender Silverface Twin Reverb cracked after our last show. On the inside of the amp, it says to use 6L6GC tubes. I didn't realize that different tubes make your amp sound different. Are 6L6GC tubes the only kind that sound good in my amp. Obviously I have no clue what I'm talking about, so any help would be great! I play in an indie/alt. rock band if that helps for the sound I'm going for. Members L6Sguy
for all intents and purposes, your amp is designed only for 6L6 tubes. yes other tubes will sound different, but most will not work in your amp. go here, download the Tube Primer. it should be required reading for all tube amp users/owners. Members EDS1275
best bet is talk ot a tech. there are a wide range of 6l6Gc...the early 6l6G and GB, forgot the letter but the won't tkae a SF twins voltage. I think modern 5881 will work as will new Kt66's . Even different brands of 6l6gc will haver differnt sounds. old RCA blake plates are the best but the are $$$$$. look around the net and do some research, again find a tech who works on vintage tube amps and works with you not one of these guys who grinds out repairs all day. your style and taste will help. webber vst board and the vintage amp forum are good places to check. a tube dealerKCA nos tubes has some reviews of tubes as well

Members Instrospection
6L6GC's will probably last longer, because they're meant to get the full wattage that you're supposed to get out of your amp. Though you can get away with 5881 Tung Sol's and 5881WXT Sovteks, because I had those in my amp.....but my Electro Harmonix 6L6EH (their equivalent of 6L6GC) have lasted the longest and are the most durable, and they have great tone/ sound. I don't recommend Groove Tubes, simply because they're rebranded Sovteks--if paying alot more money for Sovteks is your thing, haha (alot of brands relabel Sovteks as their own). EH makes their own. So yeah, the 6L6EH--great tube, great price, great sound (detail, microphonics).
