I just bought a 1972 deluxe reverb and I was wondering what I should use to get that overdriven tone. Only the amp?

I own a 1979 ts808 and a fulltone II which I will check out. But are there other pedals that work welll with this amp?? Clon?

The Deluxe Reverb will start to overdrive around 3 or so on the volume, so I guess it all depends on how much you're gonna crank it.

Personally, I think TSs sound like {censored} through a DR - the amp has enough mids already, why add more?

Anything with a good EQ is a must - so my vote is for a Timmy, Silver Kiss, or Skreddy Screw Driver.

I should have clarified: Keeley modded Tube Screamer (I forget that people use unmodified Tube Screamers :) )

I play Strat's and Tele's into an early 70's Deluxe and I like to use either a Sparkle Drive or my Analogman modded Boss SD-1/TS-808 Silver Mod for overdriven tones. You can use a combination of amp volume and stomp box level (not drive) for a nice natural overdrive that cleans up well with your guitar volume knob.

If I want something more, I like the Marshall Drive Master. It's an underrated pedal (IMHO), with about the most useable controls of any dirt box I've played.

Congratulations on your purchase.

I just put a eminence legend speaker in it and it sounds good, but it lacks some top end. The amp breaks up very early, around 3. I also get some poping sounds and I can smell something burning when I turn up... somethings not right

Does the speaker impedance match up to the output transformer impedance? (8 ohms)

In any case, but the original back in until you find out what it is. It's worked for 36 years without burning up, it should do that again until you find out what's wrong with it.

I just got the ac booster and the sparkle drive. I thought the ac booster had a weird midtone gnarl to it.. Not to my taste... but the sparkle seams nice.. but somethings not right with the amp. The pedals doesnt blend in with thte amp like Im used to

Just curious, what did you pay for the amp? I bought a '76 back in 2000 and then tuned out of the market, but it seems like silverface amps have gone through the roof since then.

BTW, a DR will sound great with almost ANY pedal. . . other than a treble booster, avoid those for sure. Beyond that, my DR makes pedals sound better than any of my other amps. For something cheap and really versatile, check out a voodoo lab superfuzz. It actually works great as an overdrive, cleans up well with guitar volume, and can matches up really well with a deluxe. Of course, it can do all the high gain you want as well.

As for your problems with the amp, my DR has been somewhat unreliable. In the 8 years I've owned it, it's been in the shop 4 times I think, which IMO is about 2 too many. It's actually in the shop right now for some reverb and fuse blowing issues. Best bet is to get it checked out by a good tech. If the eminence doesn't suit your tastes, try to find a deal on a used Weber 12F150 or Reverend All-Tone 1250, both are great speakers in a DR. Just be sure to get an 8 ohm version, and with the Weber try to find a 30-watt one.
