Members fuzzface71
I'm thinking of getting one for my iMac to store music and some past and future projects (photoshop etc..) How much capacity do I need/ would be enough? Right now, I have atleast 60G worth of music on my iPod. I might need to put them back to iTunes, and then save and run iTunes in an external hardrive. Is 500 enough? What a good brand? Thanks in advance!
Members pbone
I use a 320GB WD external HD and it's great. I store all my music on there, and all my SLR pictures. 500GB should probably be too much for you.

Members Northstar
In this day and age, not having a backup drive is asking for trouble. Mac OS' integrated Time Machine backup system works like a charm.
Members DanJep
I use a WD passport 250. Works great but could be faster (bah usb). I chose this one over powered firewire drives because it's powered through USB.

Members rockstrongo
I have an external Seagate 500GB drive for my Macbook Pro. Works great, and it has plenty of space for my music recording and other stuff.
Members R Corso
I use hot-swap Glyph drives in smaller sizes, (80, 120) so I am not always working the same drive for different projects. Less wear and tear I figger.
Members Saturnine10
Yea, Ive got 2 Ext. HD's.. 500gb Western Digital and a 250gb Lacie.. Both are almost filled (photography is a bitch like that) and now i'm looking to get a terabite HD.. I would highly recommend any Western Digital product, there stuff is just awesome.. The Lacie drive i have is nice, but it seemed to kinda bog down when almost filled unlike the WD drive.. Get firewire 800 if you can, most Mac's have a port now.. Members fuzzface71
Another question. Can I run my iTunes through the external hardrive, rather than my regular one? How do I did that? Do I just drag the whole iTunes folder?
Members MegaTom
Yes. Open the iTunes preference window, click the "Advanced" tab and change the "iTunes Music folder location" to your desired folder/drive. BTW, with the price of hard drive space being as low as it is these days, get the maximum amount you can afford. And definitely use a chunk of that as dedicated backup space for your computer. Members Loobster
I'm gonna get a 500 gig hard drive next week and put pretty much everything on it. My macbook is only 80gig and I've got about 40 gig of music which has slowed it down a lot.
Members Jet Bycraft
I've had good luck with Seagate and Lacie . I've had a couple of Western Digital hard drives go bad on me.
Members mike.sartori
I got a 160 gig WD, it suits my needs, but I don't need much more than the 80 gigs on my macbook.
Members gregovertone
avoid lacie. 500+ can be had cheap. WD is recommended....great drives, RARELY crash, and when they do, WD has great service. when you buy a drive - any drive - reformat - 'mac os journaled'
Members Welladjusted
I'm using an 80gb for time machine backups. I forget the brand, but for media storage, you'll want more. 500 will give you a fair bit of room for audio and video though
Members MegaTom
avoid lacie. ... Why? I, and many, many others, have been using Lacie for years...? For the most part, it's been a very reliable brand.
Members ert
i have the fully usb powered WD 160 gigger with my mac book which is great, but i plan to pick up the WD 1TB book shelf unit soon...i figure i wont need more than that. its enough to use and partition off a chunk for time machine. Members jorhay1
regardless of size you need 2 ext drives 1 for data 1 for back up if not, your asking for trouble bad experience: Western Digital Ext (int OK), cheap bargin drives recommend: G drive, La Cie, Glyph
Members GraphicFuzz
I use a Lacie 500 GB (triple interface) connected via firewire 800. Transfer rates are super fast, but I do notice some lag sometimes when first engaging the drive, which can be annoying. All hard drives brands fail. I had a bad experience that cost me over $1000 to recover only partial data. If you have valuable data make a DVD backup, as well as backing up on external HD. It could save you big bucks and hours of nausea down the road.
Members girevik
I bought my external HD from Pacific Pro Audio years ago. It's still solid. Pretty happy with it. http://pacificproaudio.com/ For anyone buying a new portable Mac, I recommend an internal 7200rpm drive. You can get less expensive external drives or even a USB thumb drive for your backup if you go this route. The reason I got my external Firewire HD was laptops didn't come with faster than 5600rpm internal drives.
