Members dlj112
I have just discovered the joys of the FX loop. My DML 10 and DD6 sound fantastic with some gain hitting them, and I now see delay in a whole new light. Problem is, I'm an idiot. I was setting up for practice today, and during practice noticed that my tone was a bit squishy and my amp (JVM410 combo) seemed a little quiet I figured that it was just a pedal problem and I would fix it after practice, but then I noticed that the practice room seemed unusually hot. Finally, about an hour into practice I go to kick on the DD6 and nothing happens.... I then look to see what the deal is with the loop, and surprise surprise I have my pedals plugged into the pre amp out and the power amp in . I fixed that ASAP and the amp sounded fine (and brewtally loud). You all think I did any lasting damage/ any similar stories?

Members dlj112
No, it was just one of my more special moments, though I can think of worse instances of plugging into the wrong input . I guess this really belongs in the FAIL thread. Just out of curiosity though... how close was I to destroying my amp?
Members Bigsnake
Get some different colored tape and wrap it around the cable ends to let you know what goes where easily
Members SonicVI
Is preamp out/power amp in not the same thing as an FX loop?
Members billythegoat
More often than not I will plug everything in turn it on and almost have an aneurysm trying to figure out why there isn't any sound. Only to look down and realize that my volume pedal is all the way off.

Only to look down and realize that my volume pedal is all the way off. I setup my pedals on my board once not pay attention and wasn't getting any sound. I started testing every patch cable starting from the amp end... Went through all of the board and finally got to the 2nd to first pedal and realized I was plugged into the remote plug on my DS-

Members dlj112
Wow I wish I were that clever but I wasn't trying to be an asshole and trick you all, check this out http://www.marshallamps.com/downloads/files/JVM%20hbk%20Eng.pdf at the very bottom there is a schematic, and there is a separate parallel effects loop the the preamp out. Can anyone explain this because my amp was definitely not happy when I tried to use the preamp out
Members dmk
the fx loop is usually before the master volume, with the pre send and power in being after the MV. you were probably hitting the DD6 with a signal too hot for it, making it clip the volume. as for damaging the amp? not a chance in hell
Members SonicVI
Seems the power amp/preamp loop is meant for line level, so you would've lost a lot of signal level, but I can't imagine how it could've caused any damage.
Members cdawzrd
Oh, that makes sense. Sorry for assuming this was a troll thread. Yep, the FX loop probably is at -10db line level, not at instrument level like the DD-6 is designed for. It's expecting rackmount effects, not stomps. You can't damage your amp that way though. Members dlj112
Awesome thanks a lot guys, It just heated up more than usual so I got a bit worried. Haha cd when you first asked me if I was a troll I was freaking out because I thought what I had done was so bad that it would have meant a fuse would have blown in seconds, or worse...
