all good advice

oddly enough, another thing that helped me was reading up or watching documentaries online on how unhealthy pre-prepared food is, like often moreso than just fatty and sugary.

walk as much as possible. start thinking in the long-term. start swimming if there's a pool nearby. use stairs instead of the elivators and escalators right next to them. every little bit counts

I know two sure fire ways:

1. Go to hospital for 2 months like I just did, almost die, stop being able to eat, and loose 20 kilo.

OR

2. Eat 5 small meals a day, 2 of which should be meal replacement drinks. They need to be portioned. You need to have protein (meat) the size of your palm, and veggies the size of your palm in each meal. Try to stay away from white foods. White bread, potato, pasta, etc. This will speed your metabolism up a lot. If your REALLY serious about this, PM me for more help. I used to do bodybuilding, and be a personal trainer. I'm always happy to help people who are willing to put the effort in and get off their ass. :thu:

The BEST thing to do to help speed the metabolism up is stationary bike riding for 20mins in the morning before food also. You need to increase the intensity of your riding in increment.

You don't actually NEED to run. The best way to burn fat is to take a brisk walk for 40-60min/day. It doesn't look as cool as running, but when you get your heart rate up to the point where, during your exercising, you can barely keep a conversation going, you're in the fat burning zone. When youre heart rate gets higher than that, you actually start burning muscle.

But, interval training is great too. I like to do this: warm up for 5 min. Then jog 5, brisk walk 5, jog 4, brisk walk 4, all the way down to 1 minute. That's a 30min workout right there and then you can add whatever you want to that. If you haven't done much exercising, you'll prolly find that you can't maintain a jog/run for 30min b/c your cardio isn't there yet. So work your way up.

This is actually KEY!! If you can break up your meals into smaller meals so you eat 5-6 times a day, it makes a huge difference. All the above advice is spot on. The only thing I'd add, is start looking at calories of foods. For example, 2 Tbs of Peanut Butter is 200 calories! The natural PB is good for you, but if you go a little skimpy on the PB, you can skim a good amount of calories right there.

Start learning the caloric value of the foods you most commonly eat, then start keeping a journal (or mental notes) of how many calories you eat by the end of the day. That really helped me lose weight. I bought a book that lists the calories of thousands of foods (raw, and the packaged kinds you buy at the store). I got off that habit for a while and now I'm a bit of a pudge so I'm starting to go back to all of this stuff.

Some good things to snack on: Almonds (15-20), and Cheese stx. Veggie burgers like the Vegan Boca Burgers don't have many calories. I think each burger is less than 100 calories. 1% or 4% cottage cheese is low cal and filling too.

This is true. You will burn about the same amount of calories by briskly walking 3 miles as you will running them. Of course, it will take you a lot longer to walk those miles but if you have the time that's ok. That said, running is awesome and a challenge so if you are inclined you should give it a shot. Just make sure someone fits you for running shoes.

I do pushup and sit up (3x20, add 5 each week) a couple time every day. It cost nothing, require no equipement and you'll feel good after you've done them.

Do them now!

oh, and i'm into martial art. It's a fun way to burn fat without even thinking about it. And you'll learn to defend yourself as a bonus.

That's not necassarily good for losing weight though, is it?

I've done that. :thu: It works like a charm, but I didn't really need to lose weight so I ended up looking like a heroin addict.

I lost 45Lbs in ~3.5 months by eating a very low fat and very reduced calorie diet and walking or cycling 90 minutes every day that it was possible. The first couple of weeks is the hardest but once you start seeing that it's working it's easier to stay motivated to keep it up, at least that's my experience.

Yeah it's nothing like cardio. I guess you'd lose some weight eventually. The trouble is, you'll get six pack abs with a layer of fat on top of 'em. Contrary to popular belief you can't localize fat burning ... it's all or nothing. Still, situps and pushups are good for a core workout.

It's true, cardio is the very best but it takes time and commitement that people don't always have a the beginning. And sometime being overweight is an overall "lifestyle" problem. Just doing -->steadily
A slob who listen TV 12hour/day while eating chips/drinking coke is not going to do 1hour cycling a day overnight. It requires way too much discipline and commitement.

in my humble opinion.

what helping me is cutting everything I eat by 1/3. And making difference between real hunger and emotional hunger. I'm down 20lbs in a month and a half without much sacrifice.

edit : in not saying that fedexpope is a fat chips eating slob. i'm generalizing. :thu:

I have a weight issue and since I take insulin it is even harder for me to lose weight (insulin causes your body to store fat).

I have found that cutting out as much sugar and over processed carbs helps, as well as getting a good amount of excersize. I joined a gym about 1 1/2 months ago and I am now taking half the insulin I used to. I have to hit the gym on my way home from work becuase if I go home I will not make it to the gym.

Yeah the keys are 1) baby steps and 2) persistence.

When I started running I couldn't make it around the block. I did the run/walk thing for weeks before I could go a mile without stopping. Within four months I could do 30 minutes at a 9 minute/mile pace. Now I run 10K's as a workout. The biggest challenge is getting out the door in the first place.

And +1 for a change in diet ... it's sooooooo much easier to not eat those calories in the first place.

I find that I alternate between being extremely lazy, then having spells of thinking to myself "{censored}, you'd better get a bit fitter". During the latter periods I'll exercise like a demon. My weight goes up or down very quickly. After I graduate in May I'm gonna work as a cycle courier for a year, cycling about 60/70 miles a day. :o:(

Drink the right amount of water, make sure to do some kind of walking every day for about a half hour to an hour, and learn caloric content of your food.

I used to be a chubby little bastard, then I stop eating so damn much, grew a little, and started taking care of my body. You'll feel a hell of a lot better too.

Props for taking the first step!
