Delay for solos

Hi,

I want a delay pedal to use with my reverb pedal to beef up my solos.

Metal/Rock solos.

I had an AD9 - Ibanez analog but wasn't too keen on it so sold it.

Which pedal do I want?

Suggestions welcome! :thu:

I'ver had good luck with analogs (DMM) and digitals (DD3 in particular in my case). Obviously the two sound nothing alike, but they each did/do the trick. I have an AD9 (original, not RI) and I haven't been that impressed with it for the tight thickening sound. It'd good for other stuff (IMO) but not that.

If you didn't like the Ibanez, you're probably not going to like many analog delays. If you can find one, get a used Boss RV-3. There's one in spam thread, I believe. It does a killer delay/reverb combo, and then you can kick your verb pedal to the curb and save some pedalboard space.

For stuff that's currently in production, check out the Boss RE-20. It's got a delay & verb combo, and is getting lots of praise 'round these parts.

Cheers, I'll see if I can find one. There was just something about the AD9 I didn't like. Can't put my finger on it because it was a while ago I sold it now.

The RV3 is a great idea if you like digital. I have a RV3 laying around. I'm gonna give it a try, too. :thu:

Where did you have it in the chain? If you use an amp's distortion channel, most folks don't care for having delay in front of distortion, in that case it usually sounds better in the amp's fx loop.

I don't think the RV3 would be good to beef up your sound. I would try the Carbon Copy. I use it for that Gilmour type sound. It's a good price and most Guitar Centers have one in stock. Worth trying before shelling out 200+ dollars. But I definitely think the "darker" sounding analog delays might be the right choice. Also look into the Malekko E300 Dark. It has trail mode, which is nice for analog delays.

I just want a delay that will work well with distortion. 80's metal kinda thing ya know?

80's metal tone was completely NOT about analog. This also explains why the AD9 didn't work out for you. The dd3 is a good (and affordable) option if you want delay alone. The RV3 may not be bad, still. It gives you delay (alone), reverb (alone) and the 2 togther depending on which Mode you have it in. I've heard decent things about the Digitech X series digital dealy, but have never used one.

+1 on the DD-3. And then preferably a old Japanese one or a DD-2. They just sound warmer as the newer ones. I have a DD-2 on my board that i use exclusively for leads. I really prefer digital delays for solo's and stuff because they are much clearer and don't get muddy. I also have a EHX DMM on my board for soundscapes and ambient clean stuff. Which i find analog delay's much more usefull for.

Cool. I have a reverb pedal which I pretty much use all the time so the delay will be there add depth to the solos.

Thanks for the replies guys I'll check out the DD2/3's.

Explains why I didn't like my analog delay, woopsie!
