Finally A/B sound samples of Overdrive/Distortion Effects

Alright, I've been working on this for the past few months and finally got everything recorded and updated.

One thing that drives me nuts is searching online at manufacturers and retailers websites to hear tone samples of guitars, amps, and effects only to find that they have gone the extra mile to make their product sound as good as they possibly can. Honestly, you can't really blame them for this, who wouldn't want their product to shine and manufactures are just trying to showcase their products. The problem is that it puts us, the consumer, at a disadvantage. If you are like me and you research products extensively before buying, you probably know more about it when you walk into the music store than the poor salesman trying to earn his commission.

Finally a true A/B test for overdrive and distortion effects.

I used all the overdrive/distortion effectst that I have and played the exact same thing through each. I also set the effects at the exact same settings as much as possible. Finally, I used both single coil and humbucker to give a little more idea of what each would sound like.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

to be completely honest, i really appreciate the effort you put into this, but idk if its because these are going direct through the pod but they definitely sound more "direct" and often woofy to me than they might going through a "real" amp. However, i can hear the variations between the pedals. Thanks, and great job!

Very cool, I'm glad you put this together. I listened to most (but not all) of the samples, and the FD2 in particular seemed to suffer by comparison just based on volume. If you were going to take a second crack at this, I wouldn't consider it a violation of the intended spirit to play with the Volume to get roughly uniform output levels.

Online clip comparisons can be unreliable, but my preference based on your clips -- the Maxon OD820 -- matches my personal experience with it.

I totally get what you are saying about the volume levels. I considered leveling everything out but decided against it. When all the pedals are set EXACTLY the same, THAT is their output. Some are lower than others.

really nice, man i really didnt know the english muffn had that much low end

Oh I know. The Ibanez TS9DX tries to do that with the TURBO mode but it just gets all splatty. Kinda like a pedal that wants to be fuzzy, but just cant quit make it.

As far as the TS9DX pedal, I pretty much stick to the TS9 and TS9plus modes. The turbo mode for me seems worthless.

out of all of em' the muff'n seems to have the most amount of gain.

It's also very touch sensitve and cleans up well. Playing with the tone knobs gets you a pretty wide range of good usable "English" tones, Vox -> Super Lead -> JCM 800. :rawk:

so your solution is to record everything as bad as you possibly can?

The goal is to record all the pedals with the same settings so you can see how each pedal reacts at the same settings. It demos where OD kicks in, tone response, etc.

I am working on another showcase version of the page that has best mild distortion and heavy distortion with varying settings for each pedal. This is to highlight where the pedal really shines.

Don't waste time or energy on the troll.

BTW It's a good idea. I own one of those pedals and it's interesting to hear comparisions.

thanks.

which one of the pedals do you have?

Fulldrive 2.

I know some people dont like PODs (me included) but the sound is close IMHO and therefore the site is again IMHO useful. No substitute for trying one of course. I'd like to see more pedals but that could get expensive.

The fulldrive 2 is by far my favorite OD pedal. Very thick and meaty and the harmonic fullness just seems to be just what I am after.
