Phaser - Pre or post gain?

Do you put your phaser before distortion stages or post-gain, as you would time-based effects?

 

Any logic behind where the phaser should be in the signal chain, or is it entirely based on preference?

i like both for different things, generally i'll make sure i have some kind of dirt either side...

I prefer it pre-gain, but I like chorus and flanger in the loop. And then I like trem post-gain but in front of the amp.

i usually put my phaser before gain, but i have a ds-1 in front of it that i rarely turn on. phaser post gain sounds too overwhelming, but can be very cool at times.

after all my dirt in front of the amp, I'll probably get an amp with an effects loop after I get out of school.

I have everything (delay, reverb, POG etc) before my dirt pedals and phaser before drive is a particular favourite of mine.

So, there's no real consensus that the phaser should be at one specific point in the signal chain?

 

I used to use the phaser on my multi-effects unit after the preamp, and it sounded great. But, (now that I've slimmed down my rig), I've been wanting to add a good phaser to the mix again.

 

The poll results make it look as though running phaser in front of the amp is the most common preference so far.

best thing to do is try it both ways,i thought this is a fairly obvious choice TBH!

phase is a little more swirly/filter-like when used pregain, whereas it is more whooshy and flange-like when used after gain.

 

I like both depending on context, so I go with phaser after fuzz and before overdrive, so i can get some serious swoosh on spacey/trashy/buzzy/fuzzy stuff and get a little more swirly on my overdriven parts.
