Keys to making a good pedal demo

1. Unless it's something really 'out there' I don't need you to explain what the knobs do.

2. If you're making a video and I can clearly see your guitar you don't need to tell me it's a '98 super deluxe tv yellow telecaster. Same goes for your ac30.

3. Less talking, more playing.

4. If you insist on talking adjust your mic so I can hear you.

5. I really don't need to hear how fast you can play

If you're demoing an od pedal, definitely don't show us what the clean sound is and use as many other effects as possible at the same time-delay, chorus, flanger, etc. Seriously, I've seen demos just like that on youtube. Whatever I said, do the oppsite.:thu:

I dont agree with the clean sound....
at least to get a feeling what the gear sounds through the recording equip the person is using....

now what I would like to see is the same riff, chord, lick trough different settings... not ramdom wanking!

If you guys want pedal demos done your way then start making them yourselves. Im happy that people make them and if they play however they like in them then thats fine by me.

I can't demo pedals I don't own.

Just something to note that not everyone on the internet is as knowledgeable as you are. Also, while it might be obvious that "it's a telecaster," there are a number of different models of telecasters out there and it might not be immediately evident what type of telecaster it is.

+1, you should always briefly discuss your gear (don't overdo it though...I hate videos where they spend a minute talking about their setup and a minute playing the pedal).

Yeah that's what I was getting at. I've seen people talk about the kind of aftermarket pickups in their guitar, what tuning they're using, etc.

I've seen some where they'll hold up the guitar and or say "I'm using a USA strat through a deluxe reverb RI." I have no problem with keeping it short and simple.

The video demos by 'proguitarshop' are probably my favorites. It seems like they go really in depth with everything a pedal is capable of doing.

I LOVE PGS. Without a doubt my favorite youtube series.

Second that. I've found them really informative and useful. Simple and effective step by step exploration and explanation of each dial on the pedals. Perfect.

I can't believe some of the utterly redundant demo's on Youtube. There's one where this guy off camera literally talks for 30 seconds before playing anything and you can't hear a word he says. You'd think the people would actually play back what they've just done to see what it looks and sounds like. :freak::freak:

I know it's a visual medium, but you only need that aspect to show the dial positions. So anything that shows some dead-eyed guy showing off his new toy and staring into the camera really puts me off.

I was being sarcastic-just saying I hate it when people are demo'ing a dirt pedal and start out with dirt-I can't tell what's from the amp and what's from the pedal. Happens a lot too.

There are some great ones out there too-especially helpful when someone has 3 similar pedals and compares them side-by-side, like three different modded tube screamers or something like that.
