So... I think my RAT is broken

I'm almost certain actually. I lent my ProCo RAT pedal to a friend for a tour. He finally bought his own on the road and sent mine back to me on the road. I got it today, and something isn't right. No matter which extreme to which I twist the "Distortion" knob, the amount of distortion doesn't change. This may not bother me if he didn't play in a punk rock band and had it cranked all the way up. And this is how it's stuck now.

Unfortunately, I hardly ever use the RAT at its full distortion, I mostly play hard blues and roots rock.

I guess what I'm asking is... are there any ideas on how to remedy this? I haven't ever messed with a pedal before so I'm only asking because I don't want to rip into this thing and screw something up. Got any ideas?

I was thinking that something simply came loose.

This is why you do not lend gear to punk musicians.

I let my punk rock buddy borrow my Tele before, came back with blood all over the pickguard and some nifty scratches all over the bottom near the strap button. Not that I mind the scratches, but the blood was a little much.

Lesson learned, huh? ;)

Haha, indeed. I actually used to be in a punk band with this guy and thought him to be quite responsible though. True, he knew very little about instruments and amplifiers (not to bash Marshall, but he only bought one because everyone else did... same goes for Les Paul) but he took very good care of all of his equipment.

I guess I shouldn't have assumed he'd do the same for mine. ;)

Look at where the legs of the pot are soldered to the board. Run the pedal (volume low) with it open and try to wiggle the pot. . . If all else fails, you'll be able to send it back to ProCo - they rock.
