You honestly think they could possibly have some sort of info that can't be found on here? Articles like that are a total joke. In fact, guitar magazines are a joke, I can't believe they can stay in business.

and if you were offered a job that entailed reviewing and writing about all maner of new guitar related toys plus travelling the world attending trade shows you would say...?

Whether or not I would take a job with a guitar magazine has nothing to do with how stupid they are. You can get a damn near infinite amount of info about guitar stuff in MUCH greater detail online FOR FREE. Why would anyone pay to buy a magazine, especially when a good chunk of it is tabs for {censored}ty songs?

Instead when you browse this forum you get to wrap your brain around infinite 'tehs' and other grammatical delights that you usually dont see in guitar mags. Im not saying that guitar mags are great but I dont think theyre worthless either. You dont get a lot of artist interviews on HC anyway.

They have massive circulation and probably 75% of guitarists get their main feed of info from them. ...

I doubt it's that much. I'd say more like 20%, if that much. You're thinking 25 years ago. I expect that GP mag and a lot of the others are struggling just to stay afloat. How much is it now, $9.00?? Something like that? With the internet these days, who wants to spend that much on a magazine packed with ads and cards that fall out all over the place.

Because in a magazine you can get a lesson from Slash or Sonny Landreth. Online you can get a lesson from Joe Nobody or John Smith.

The publishing industry is still operating very very much in the black. GP and those other mags are part of massive publishing companies that include some of the major money magazines. They have no problem putting out magazines for years to come.

There's plenty of free lessons online. Sure, most of them are from random guys, but those random guys are frequently better teachers than Slash or whoever. Selling lots of albums doesn't make you a good instructor.

And Nitefly, you work in publishing, of course you're gonna say that ! :)

Well, since a couple of the people reporting have been building pedal boards for years, yeah, i think they have something to offer. I especially find here that there is way to much bull{censored} from people that don't know what they are talking about except that they try and prove their point and or defend their purchase. People like you are the one of the biggest jokes on the web.

I dont work in publishing. I work for a newspaper which is more media than publishing. Newspapers still are making profits, just not the really high ones they made in the golden age of newsprint.

Magazines are a different story from what I do now but Ive been there and there is a lot of money that gets thrown around. Case in point - a magazine I worked for needed a photo shoot of a guy for a small feature. Said guy's photos were just him on a pile of something, I dont remember what it was. Total cost for 3 photos: $3000.

It is a bummer when you you look at musicians rigs and they mistake the gear...In one Guitar World I have (only bought it for the buckethead feature) they say Dave Grohl uses a Boss BR-2 flanger. Just makes me laugh. It shouldn't be too hard to get right.

Oh they make terrible mistakes. Theyll spell new companies names wrong, theyll put the wrong color guitar with the review so the story doesn't match the picture. They make tons of gear mistakes. Thats really the problem with magazines. They have small staffs and not a lot of stuff gets as much copy editing and proofing as it should.

But they still make a decent read when you're in the {censored}ter

I subscribe to GP ($14 a year) because I think it has some pretty good articles in it on a wide variety of topics. They do review pedals a fair amount which I like. I think the pedalboard issue was good, but I think they missed some good opportunities to include boards from the not so rich and famous. Most people reading GP do not have Pete Cornish building custom boards for them. It would've been cool if they had used some boards from people here and other forums, with some tips and tricks, etc.

It's a decent magazine, I hope they continue with their gear focus, especially on pedals, and pedal comparisons.
