Members Lanefair
All this time I've been saying how good the bad monkey makes my tube amp sound. Which it does. But what I forgot was that I replaced my BYOC comp with it. I think that not having a compressor on has improved the way I play, and actually given me more punch and sustain, if you can believe that. I've used a comp since forever to get things to ring out, but I could never command notes out of a guitar like I can now. So my playing's really gone up a step and I think it's because I dumped a comp for a boost. Anyone agree/disagree?
Members bhsbhswarp
i agree, comp used wrong takes away all dynamics.
Members The Great Waldo Pepper
Yup! I use compression to cheat at my clean playing, especially hacking at country style licks. But I am covering up how bad I really am at it!
Members Faldoe
i agree, comp used wrong takes away all dynamics. Word. I just got a Barber Tone Press - my first comp, it can really aid to some parts but take away dynamics too. You gotta know when to use it.
Members veil
Boosting also adds compression. :poke:

Members IRG
I agree, I've had 3 compressors, but I don't have the need for one. SUstain was not increased, which is what I really wanted. Dynamics are an important part of my playing, and compressing them made no sense. I can see why some people need it, but not me. Also less noise now too, always a good thing. I won't have a compressor again.
Members FedExPope
i thought about getting one for playing at bedroom levels. i still kinda want one for my math rock licks.

Members Crxsh
I don't understand compressors. I had one for awhile .... never could figure it out. Sold it to someone in Canada. Felt better instantly.

Felt better instantly. for recording guitars I understand, for vocals I understand, for Bass I think they are fantastic, for live guitar I don't really think they are needed.....well not for me anyway. Members booher
Compressors are particularly worthless. Useless, in your opinion. Worthless? Hah, get your hands on a ross compressor and see what people are willing to pay for it. But, they have a lot of good uses that probably just don't fit into your playing style. Felt better instantly. That was me. I offloaded it to someone else I think was in America. Full circle! But anyway, I can't do without a comp. Smoothes out my playing and just makes stuff like hammer-ons and pull-offs more discernable.
Members TechBrother
I find that using comp helps me hear myself whan playing live. At the same time leaving comp on all the time can be a bad thing.
Members SammyHawk
I have a compressor, but hardly ever use it. I use it now and then to try and get a similar sound to that of Selfish {censored}, but that's it. I've found it can easily be overused.

A local guy I know (a great player) uses his all time ... so I figured I'd try one out. Had no idea what I was doing ..... so now it's gone. Members Lanefair
that is what I have been saying to all you guys for years... I think that a boost is better than a comp for a tube amp. I probably wouldn't feel the same with a solid state amp, or a super clean tube amp. Members DanJep
I used to leave my comp on all the time, now I turn it off frequently. I still love the sound, just in moderation.
Members willburford
I have one that I leave all the time. I haven't noticed a difference in my playing style, really... I just like how it makes everything jump out more, makes clean sounds 'snap' a bit, and how it fattens up the dirt (using a tele that I recently got, used to humbuckers). Maybe I should turn it off and see if I suddenly suck after having it on all the time for 3 months.
