Bodenhamer Electronics mods!

So I remember a long time ago when our very own LordOVChaos posted in this forum offering up cheap mods, I was interested but had no money to spare at the time. Well, I recently got back two pedals that he modded for me, so I wanted to give everyone the scoop.

First of all, I sent him my DS-1, which he did his "11" mod to, here is his explanation:

Name inspired by Spinal Tap... "This one goes to 11!!!" I named it that because I think it sounds like an old Marshall cranked up to... not 10... 11!!! Hardly anything sounds as good as an old Marshall cranked to its full potential! This mod is my take on getting that tone at any volume, through nearly any decent amp, out of a DS-1. Prepare to rock!

Wow, big difference. I originally got the DS-1 in a trade, and put it up for sale right away, but decided to keep it once I starting reading about modding it. It's incredible how much of a difference these pedals sound in the right hands. I've heard plenty of cranked Marshalls, but never owned one, so I won't go comparing that, but I will tell you that the pedal suddenly has life. Whereas before it sounded brutally painful if I put the tone knob at anything above zero (seriously), now it sounds great on lots of different tone settings, definitely sounds like a hard driven tube amp, as opposed to the harsh distortion of a pedal. I also had him put in an optional diode clipping switch, which adds more gain when flipped, but lessens the amount of available distortion. I like this mode a little better for my tastes, because I'm into less distorted, but crunchy tones and this delivers. It's great in the other mode as well, and I would say in the non-flipped position, you can probably get more of that Marshall tone by cranking the gain, it's a smoother sounding pedal in that position.

I acquired another stock DS-1 in an ebay auction (bought an ebay lot of 5 pedals) and received it the same day as I got my modded ones back, so that day I did a simple A/B test and recorded the results. Fair warning, I am not a guitar player, but I do like to play for fun, but given that, I think the clip does a good job of displaying the difference in tones from a stock DS-1 to the Bodenhamer modded one.

Info about the clip: I recorded it using the bridge pickup of my Samick FA-2 telecaster (Duncan Designed humbucker) through the two pedals, into my Peavey Classic 50 2x12 (w/ Warehouse V30's and JJ Tubes). This was mic'd with an SM57. I always do the same order, clean guitar, then stock DS-1, then Bodenhamer. Check it out.

I also had him mod my TS9DX, which is pretty cool because he did what I guess you could count as 4 separate mods in one box, using the built in mode switch. In TS9 mode, he used original TS808 diodes so it sounds like the original TS's, in + mode he does his Chaos mod (check out his website for info on the Chaos mod). Hot mode he made it have mosfet clipping with transitors (smoother top end with more available distortion). And in Turbo mode gave it more gain, volume, and bass (it's beefy).

I haven't played much with this one, but I put it through it's paces a bit last night, and i have to say I'm really digging the Chaos mod mode (+), which he can do for any TS9's or SD-1's. But all four are very usable, musical overdrives. And it's great to have the TS808 specs in the first mode.

Anyway, just wanted to add my 2 cents to this board, cause I've read so much on here and learned a lot so hopefully this will help someone elses decision down the road. I just e-mailed Joe (LordOVChaos) a little while ago to talk to him about modding my BD-2 now, cause I'm so impressed with the mods he's done for me. He even fixed my Small Stone pedal for me free of charge, that's service:)

Let me know if you have any questions about the mods or anything, and if I can't answer them, I'm sure he'll swing by and answer any questions you've got.

Yeah the very first clip is with everything on each pedal at 12, one of those "all things being equal" tests. After that, I honestly tried to dial in decent tones on each one, that's the best I could do with the stock DS-1, I could probably get even better sounds out of the Bodenhamer one than I did, but it my first time messing with the pedal

Thank you John and everyone else complimenting me in this thread! Again, I'm really glad you made some clips. I just haven't had the time or recording setup to do it myself so it helps me out A LOT when people make clips! I'll shoot you a PM about the BD-2 in a while, I gotta go out with the mrs. tonight.

He's finishing a Tuna Melt rehouse for me right now (don't know if he'd do it again, sounds like a major PITA), and he's been great thus far!

I sure as hell won't do it again for $40!!! I had fun with it though and as of about 5 minutes ago it is 100% done and will be headed back to you tomorrow. I even threw together somewhat of a paintjob on it for you :)
